The International Reference Group of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Water Network is planning to deepen its regional communication on water justice. During a meeting on 21 July, the group discerned ways to move forward in lifting up authentic experiences that reflect the insights and values of communities, particularly amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The WCC communication team helped lead reflections how the landscape for communication has changed and therefore requires a stronger prophetic voice for water justice. With a goal of higher visibility, the group discussed its key messages and audiences, particularly via the web, an e-newsletter, and social media. Special attention was given to how results will be measured.

Bishop Arnold Temple, who serves as co-chair of the group, regards water justice as a prophetic mission. “Water and sanitation are indispensable for human dignity,” he said, referring to John 10:10, in which Jesus says: "I have come that they may have life and have it to the full."

Temple said: “The fulfillment of that manifesto of Jesus' mission is central to the church's prophetic mission and that's exactly why we advocate for clean, safe and affordable supply of water for all.”

Dinesh Suna, coordinator of the WCC Ecumenical Water Network, said the International Reference Group has been meeting online at least once a month. “Currently the WCC Ecumenical Water Network is exploring possibilities to strengthen the network by providing local and regional voices on water justice to a global platform by creating a robust communication platform with the help of the WCC’s strong communication channels,” he said.
