WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia joins more than 200 religious leaders from around the world who have arrived in Moscow for the World Summit of Religious Leaders, 3-5 July 2006.

The religious summit, which is convened by the Interreligious Council of Russia, is hosted by the Moscow Patriarchate, the WCC's largest member church. The participants plan to issue a statement, addressed to all the faithful and to society in general, which will be transmitted to the Group of Eight (G8) countries scheduled to meet in St Petersburg on 15-17 July.

On the summit's agenda are a range of major contemporary issues, including the role of religion in society and political life, the challenge of globalization, and the importance of inter-cultural and interreligious dialogue.

On its opening day, the summit was addressed by Patriarch Alexis II and Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and received messages from Pope Benedict XVI and UN secretary general, Kofi Annan.
