The International Day of Prayer for Peace is being marked by dozens of churches and organizations worldwide on 21 September. The day is an opportunity for Christians and their communities in all regions to pray, reflect and act together in support of peace.

This WCC initiative was launched two years ago within the framework of its Decade to Overcome Violence (DOV), and was welcomed by UN secretary-general Kofi Annan. Its celebration coincides with the UN International Day of Peace. The theme for this year, "and still we seek peace", was chosen by churches from Latin America - the region of the DOV annual focus in 2006.

A special prayer service is being held on 21 September at 12.15 in the Ecumenical Centre, 150 Route de Ferney, Geneva.

Among several related events, an interreligious celebration, organized by the Geneva Spiritual Appeal Group, will take place in the Saint Pierre Cathedral in Geneva at 18.00.

The DOV website includes examples of prayers, resources and suggestions on how to observe the day.
