WCC general secretary urges churches' accountability and action on slavery

Invoking the dignity of all persons as created in God’s image, and the classic notion of Christian freedom, World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit urged acknowledgment of Christianity’s ambiguous role in the history of slavery and the need to address the underlying religious and cultural factors in slavery today.

3rd Explorations in Evangelism meeting: "Evangelism and the legacies of colonization and enslavement"

The Explorations in Evangelism is a process of regional meetings co-organized between the Evangelism Programme of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Council for World Mission. The primary objective of the project is to explore the work on evangelism at the grassroots level, in different contexts. In this process, major emphasis is placed on creating spaces, through exposure visits, for personal encounters with local communities, getting a firsthand taste of what constitutes evangelism work in various local contexts.

The WCC Executive Committee Statement: Commemorating The 2019 Quad-Centennial of the Forced Transatlantic Voyage of Enslaved African Peoples from Angola to Jamestown, Virginia (USA)

The WCC has acknowledged that racism is a church-dividing issue and has underlined the importance of continuing the discussion on restorative justice to people of African descent and Indigenous Peoples. Racism and racial justice is the global theme for the year of 2019 in the common journey of the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace (PJP).

Food is central to life and our faith. It is a blessing and a gift of God, in the form of the abundant creation which we depend on for our sustenance. Food is also a reflection of the quality of our relationships with each other- our caring for the other and the sharing of resources and the hospitality we show each other. Food is central to our worship life, our liturgy and the Eucharist, which helps us to be one with God and with each other.

Prayer service dedicates Pan African devotional guide

A prayer service held on 28 February at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Washington, DC dedicated a Pan African devotional guide, “Lament and Hope.” The biblical guide, created by Bread for the World, marks 400 years since enslaved Africans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia.

Forum on Modern Slavery: “Liberate them from tyranny and exploitation”

In an opening address at a Forum on Modern Slavery in Istanbul on 7 January, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew spoke on “Awareness, Action and Impact.” After many centuries of progress and advancement, we still live in a world where injustice and slavery continue to thrive, and where human dignity is exchanged for the sole purpose of greed, gain, and profit, reflected Bartholomew.
