Aboriginal representatives of Canadian churches, devastated by residential school scandals which have resulted in lawsuits against them totaling millions of dollars, told Rev. Dr Sam Kobia, WCC general secretary, that they must work together ecumenically if they are to bring hope and healing to the country’s First Nations, most of whom have had church connections for centuries.

WCC is a co-founder and sponsor of Ecumenical News International (ENI) which was launched in 1994 as a global news service reporting on ecumenical developments and other news of the churches. WCC communication covers the life and work of the organization and its activities. A 27 September ceremony in the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva will be an opportunity for the ecumenical community to celebrate the contributions of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Programme to Combat Racism (PCR), and to honour its first director, Baldwin Sjollema.

Baldwin Sjollema, first director of the World Council of Churches’ (WCC) Programme to Combat Racism (PCR), received the Oliver Tambo Order from South African president Thabo Mbeki on 16 June 2004 in Pretoria.

"The power and promise of peace" is the compelling theme for activities to be carried out this year within the framework of the World Council of Churches' (WCC) Decade to Overcome Violence (DOV) 2004 focus on the USA. A Monday 12 January worship service will mark the opening of a year dedicated to strengthening and resourcing churches and movements working for peace in the USA.

The vision at the heart of the ecumenical movement and the challenges it faces at the beginning of the 21st century in Africa were highlighted by both the outgoing and incoming general secretaries of the World Council of Churches (WCC) at the 8th Assembly of the All Africa Conferences of Churches (AACC) in Yaounde, Cameroon, on 24 November.

In a statement on Europe, the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) has called for "the central role of Christianity and the contribution of other religions to European history and civilization" to be reflected in the preamble to the European constitution.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) Central Committee has designated the United States as its 2004 focus during the Decade to Overcome Violence (DOV) (2001-2010).
