WCC general secretary honours Nobel peace laureates

Five recipients of the Nobel peace prize were hailed on Friday 7 October by the Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC). He offered his greetings and best wishes to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, one-time member of the WCC staff and former general secretary of the South African Council of Churches, on the occasion of his 80 th birthday.

Ecumenical solidarity team aids in preparation for Liberian elections

Ecumenical observers appointed by the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) have released a report on their visit to Liberia in advance of elections scheduled to take place on 11 October 2011. The seven-member delegation was led by Bishop Robert Aboagye-Mensah, a vice-president of the AACC, member of the WCC Central Committee and until recently presiding bishop of the Methodist Church in Ghana.

Political tension in Liberia occasions ecumenical team visit

In a statement on Liberia, the World Council of Churches (WCC) Central Committee meeting in Geneva 26 August-2 September 2003 expressed its appreciation for the work of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), its armed monitoring group ECOMOG, and the country's religious leaders in promoting a peace agreement and a transitional government.

WCC calls for peace-keepers in Liberia

World Council of Churches' (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser has today sent a letter to United Nations' (UN) secretary-general Kofi Annan expressing serious concern at the escalation of fighting in Liberia between government forces and the rebel group, Liberians United For Reconciliation and Democracy. Citing the "gravity of the near-anarchy situation that has developed", Raiser calls on the UN to support current peace initiatives and encourage the parties to accept a "credible peacekeeping force", with the aim of securing a lasting ceasefire.
