Metropolitan Vasilios reflects on peace process in Cyprus

It has been 46 years since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus led to the partitioning of the island, the northern third inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and the southern two-thirds by Greek Cypriots, whose government is internationally recognized. The August 1974 ceasefire line became a United Nations buffer zone, along which Cyprus remains divided.

WCC Executive Committee speaks out on migrant crises

Deeply concerned for migrants in many regions, especially those “driven to undertake journeys of desperate risk and danger”, the WCC Executive Committee has declared: “All members of the international community have a moral and legal duty to save the lives of those in jeopardy at sea or in transit, regardless of their origin and status.”

Cyprus: churches pray for unity of the island

While the Church of Cyprus, a member of the WCC, seeks unity for its island, together with other churches in the country, it recognizes that the challenge is to first heal the wounds caused by Turkish invasion 40 years ago.
