Keynote address by WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia at the Faith and Order Plenary Commission meeting, 28 July - 6 August 2004, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

In this issue, we hear voices and actions taken to address violence and peace-making in a variety of contexts in church and society, in relation to the WCC campaiggn "On the wings of a dove" (25 November - 10 December 2004), which focuses on overcoming violence vs. women and children.

If violence is an exercise of power over the powerless or a retaliation to such, what makes power prone to abuse? Why do people not only fear but also aspire for sources of violent power? Why do some religious traditions view violence as a divine attribute? How is power understood and exercised within our churches? What biblical and theological resources do we have to offer in the search for responsible new ways of understanding and exercising power? Interrogating and redefining power is crucial to our attempts to overcome violence.

Focussing on HIV/AIDS, this issue urges theological educators to heed the call to faith-based communities to take their rightful place at the frontline in the battle against the pandemic and, most of all, the stigma and discrimination people living with AIDS.

There has been a growing awareness that persons with disabilities invite the Church to explore anew the understanding of the Gospel and the nature of the Church. This interim statement, drafted with participation from the Faith and Order Commission, offers pointers and insights on major theological themes. It is hoped that it will also help the churches address inclusion, active participation and full involvement in the spiritual and social life of the church in particular and society in general.
