Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), will be visiting four Asian countries from 26 February to 9 March. Laos, Thailand, Myanmar (formerly Burma), and Pakistan will be receiving their first official visit from a WCC general secretary. The visit will assure Christian communities living in a minority situation that they have the support of the worldwide ecumenical family.

A two-day seminar organized jointly by the World Council of Churches (WCC), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank will deal with the topic of their respective concepts of development and evolving institutional mandates. The seminar will also address issues such as wealth creation, social justice and the privatization of public goods, with special emphasis on the subject of drinking water.

"Thanks to the World Social Forum, we're better prepared for the meeting we'll be having this year with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank," says Rogate Mshana, who heads the World Council of Churches' (WCC) programme on economic justice.Â

"Fifty percent of the children born in my country are born into poor homes," said Mariana Berger. "We don't want to be part of the causes that make the lives of other people in the world miserable," said Arnhild Helgesen. Mariana is from Uruguay and Arnhild is from Norway. The two young people were taking part in a discussion at the workshop on youth and globalization organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC) at the third World Social Forum.

For the World Council of Churches (WCC) delegation taking part in the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil, 23-28 January, the emphasis will be on a spirituality directed towards resistance.
