The World Council of Churches (WCC) expressed grave concern over the current state of emergency in Sudan. “Government officials, including ministers and civilian members of the Transitional Sovereign Council, have been arrested,” said WCC acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca. “It has also been reported that at least seven people have been killed and some 140 others injured after soldiers opened fire on demonstrators.”

The Executive Committee of the Joint Working Group (JWG) between the Roman Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches (WCC) met virtually on 12 October 2021 under the leadership of Most Reverend Diarmuid Martin, Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Dublin, Ireland, and His Eminence Metropolitan Nifon of Târgoviște, Romanian Orthodox Church, who welcomed the participants. On 4 October 2021, faith leaders representing the world’s major religions joined scientists at the Vatican to call on the international community to raise their ambition and step up their climate action ahead of COP26. with one voice that rejects the existential threat to humanity that nuclear weapons pose. We reaffirm that the presence of even one nuclear weapon violates the core principles of our different faith traditions and threatens the unimaginable destruction of everything we hold dear.

A special event on 7 February in Geneva marked the launch of the World Council of Churches periodical on interreligious relations Current Dialogue as an academic journal for researchers, students, interfaith practitioners, and all those interested in the study of religions. Current Dialogue thereby becomes the third WCC academic journal to be produced by publishers Wiley, alongside The Ecumenical Review and International Review of Mission.
