Ecumenical Dinner – Keynote Address by Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, General Secretary, World Council of Churches
This day, Sept 1, has become a new moment in our ecumenical calendars in recent years as The Day of Creation. This year we have as World Council of Churches, together with the Ecumenical Patriarch and other ecumenical leaders and partners,issued a unique common ecumenical call to celebrate, to pray, and to care for God’s wonderful creation. This is a meaningful sign of our Christian unity, and offers me an entry to what I want to say about being One. To be One is about life, to be together; it is about finding new ways forward together; and it is about contributing to real hope.

The WCC Central Committee encourages the study and adoption of the principles and practices of active non-violence, as the most legitimate and appropriate means of countering discrimination and oppression and of breaking the cycle of violence.

With this letter issued at its Central Committee meeting in Trondheim, the WCC reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

The WCC Central Committee encourages its member churches to be attentive to peoples and organisations working to combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling, particularly in their struggle against organised crime.

As part of the WCC Central Committee’s plenary session on the pilgrimage of justice and peace, Rev. Waltrina Middleton offered these remarks.

The justice and righteousness of the fourth beatitude are presented by Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew as a necessity. This justice is the way to happiness promised by the fourth beatitude: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). Only those who hunger and thirst for divine justice will be satisfied and filled with happiness. However, for centuries, a major question arises over the meaning of this justice: what is the justice that Matthew presents? Why, contrary to the evangelist Luke who presents a physical hunger and thirst (Luke 6:21), does Matthew emphasize the need to suffer hunger and thirst for righteousness? What kind of justice does the first Gospel present?
