World Council of Churches leaders spoke on the theme “Hospitality: On a Pilgrim’s Way of Justice and Peace" at a symposium on 23 August at the Protestant Theological University Amsterdam.

WCC Executive Committee envisions future for unity, justice and peace

The WCC Executive Committee met in Amman, Jordan from 17-23 November to approve the 2018 plan and budget and prepare for renewal of the WCC strategic plan. The Executive Committee also discerned the way forward for the WCC’s involvement in Palestine and Israel by learning more about the particular situation in Jordan and the Middle East, then discussing the challenges of the churches and the WCC response. The Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem, All Palestine and Jordan, Theophilos III, welcomed the group.

El Comité Ejecutivo del CMI discierne el futuro para la unidad, la justicia y la paz

El Comité Ejecutivo del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) se reunió en Ammán (Jordania) del 17 al 23 de noviembre para aprobar los planes y el presupuesto de 2018 y prepararse para renovar el plan estratégico del CMI. Asimismo, trazó el camino a seguir en la labor del CMI en Palestina e Israel, conociendo más de cerca la situación concreta en Jordania y Oriente Medio, y examinando las dificultades de las iglesias y la respuesta del CMI. El Patriarca de la Ciudad Santa de Jerusalén, toda Palestina y Jordania, Teófilo III, dio la bienvenida al grupo.

Los discursos pronunciados con ocasión de la inauguración de la reunión del Comité Ejecutivo del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) (Ammán, Jordania, 17 a 23 de noviembre) pusieron de relieve la importancia de la paz, la justicia y la unidad, en un momento en que el Consejo está definiendo el camino a seguir y evaluando su labor hasta la fecha.

Day of Muslim-Christian dialogue unfolds in Egypt

The second meeting of a delegation of the Muslim Council of Elders led by the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, His Eminence Professor Dr Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, and a delegation of the World Council of Churches (WCC) led by Dr Agnes Abuom, Moderator of the Central Committee of the WCC and Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary, took place at Al Azhar, Cairo, Egypt, 26 April. Dr Al-Tayyeb opened the gathering by welcoming the World Council of Churches to this important meeting which was taking place at a critical time in the history of the Middle East and the world.

Seven weeks of Lent highlight water crisis in Africa

With a prayer service on Ash Wednesday in Sealite Mihret Orthodox cathedral in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the WCC's Ecumenical Water Network began its annual Lenten campaign “Seven Weeks for Water”. This year during Lent it will raise awareness of water justice issues in Africa.

Commission of the Churches on International Affairs sets its focus on Africa

The 54th meeting of the WCC Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA) began today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, marking its yearly regional focus on Africa. During the meeting CCIA members are discussing the commission’s previous work and its outcomes focusing on Middle East, as well as setting strategic directions for activities until 2021.

WCC organizes solidarity visit to Ethiopia

A delegation from the WCC, led by WCC Central Committee moderator Dr Agnes Abuom, visited Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 21-22 October as an expression of solidarity to the member churches there. The delegation met with leaders of member churches, members of the Ethiopian interfaith council, and government representatives.

Una delegación del CMI, encabezada por la moderadora del Comité Central del CMI, Dra. Agnes Abuom, visitó Addis Abeba (Etiopía) el 21 y 22 de octubre para manifestar su solidaridad con las iglesias miembros del país. La delegación se reunió con dirigentes de las iglesias miembros, miembros del Consejo Interreligioso de Etiopía y representantes del gobierno.

Christian, Muslim leaders agree to stand against religious extremism

The role of religions in promoting peace and countering violence was discussed during a two-day dialogue between the Muslim Council of Elders and the WCC in Geneva, Switzerland from 30 September to 1 October. Two sessions of talks, hosted by the WCC, involved presentations and discussions on key aspects of peacebuilding and interreligious dialogue, paying special attention to combating religious extremism leading to violence in many parts of the world.
