For HIV-infected people in Nairobi, the Eastern Deanery Aids Relief Program makes a difference. By providing a quarter of the antiretroviral therapy care, it helps around 26,000 HIV-infected people in the Kenyan capital to live normal lives.

August in Amsterdam ist nur eine der zahlreichen Veranstaltungen, die der ÖRK, seine Mitgliedskirchen und Partner planen, um den Pilgerweg der Gerechtigkeit und des Friedens weiterzugehen und gleichzeitig diese 70 Jahre ökumenischen Strebens zu ehren und von ihnen zu lernen. Dr. Abuom, die Vorsitzende des ÖRK-Zentralausschusses, sprach in einem Interview über die Entwicklung des ÖRK in den letzten 70 Jahren.

It’s 70 years since the World Council of Churches was founded in Amsterdam on 23 August. In addition to a commemoration service in Amsterdam on 23 August, the WCC, its member churches and partners are planning a variety of events to move forward on our ongoing Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace, and at the same time honour and learn from these 70 years of ecumenical endeavour. Dr Abuom, from the Anglican Church of Kenya, is the moderator of the WCC Central Committee. She is the first woman and the first African in the position in WCC’s history. In an interview, she reflects on the evolution of the WCC in the past 70 years.

Hace 70 años que se fundó el Consejo Mundial de Iglesias en Ámsterdam, el 23 de agosto. Además de un servicio de conmemoración que tendrá lugar en Ámsterdam el 23 de agosto, el CMI, sus iglesias miembros y asociados ecuménicos están preparando varios eventos para seguir avanzando en nuestra actual peregrinación de justicia y paz, y, al mismo tiempo, rendir homenaje a estos 70 años de labor ecuménica y aprender de ellos. Il y a 70 ans, le 23 août à Amsterdam, était fondé le Conseil œcuménique des Églises. Outre la célébration d'un office de commémoration le 23 août prochain à Amsterdam, le COE, ses Églises membres et ses partenaires prévoient d'organiser de nombreuses manifestations. Objectifs: poursuivre notre Pèlerinage de justice et de paix et, dans le même temps, honorer et tirer des leçons de ces 70 années d'efforts œcuméniques. Lors de la 10e Assemblée du COE, Agnes Abuom a été élue à l'unanimité présidente du Comité central du COE. Elle est la première femme et la première Africaine à occuper ce poste dans l'histoire du COE.

On 12 March, Jane Murenga, a head teacher at a local Anglican Church-sponsored primary school, was raped and murdered in Githure village, Kirinyaga County in Kenya. She was hosting her younger sister at her home. She left the main house to take a shower in the bathroom which is detached from the house. Her sister decided to check on her, only to find her on the ground lifeless with a man on top of her, raping her.

“In our community, HIV is not spoken about openly. And the challenge is, it’s like people are both informed and not informed. They know what HIV is, that it’s an illness that can be treated, but still they don’t want to really talk about it, like they don’t really want to know about it…”

«Dans notre communauté, on ne parle pas ouvertement du VIH. Or, le problème, c’est que les gens sont à la fois informés et ignorants. Ils savent ce qu’est le VIH, que c’est une maladie qu’on ne peut pas soigner mais, pour autant, ils ne veulent pas trop en parler, comme s’ils ne voulaient pas vraiment en savoir plus.»
