German delegation finds “intolerable conditions” for displaced people on Lesbos

A German delegation comprised of representatives of municipalities, church leaders and prominent civil society organizations recently visited the Greek island of Lesbos, already hosting tens of thousands of migrants and displaced people, and was on site when the news of the opening of the Turkish border was announced and the first new arrivals were appearing.

Following a deal reached between the European Union and Turkey in March 2016, Turkey has been taking measures to prevent migrants – many of them fleeing the conflict in Syria – from reaching the EU, in exchange for European aid for migrants and refugees, and for relaxation of EU visa requirements for Turkish citizens. On Friday 28 February, after military losses in north-west Syria – where Turkey has been trying to create a safe area to resettle millions of Syrian refugees and to serve Turkish interests against the Kurds – those measures were suspended, resulting in large numbers of people attempting to cross into Greece and consequent clashes with Greek security forces.

Conference explores digital media and Orthodox pastoral care

The benefits of digital media in the mission of the Orthodox Church, as well as the dangers of over-use, were discussed at the 2nd International Conference on Digital Media and Orthodox Pastoral Care. The conference was based on the view of the digital world as a sphere for the reiteration of Pentecost and the “living world” of Saint Paul the Apostle. The event was held on 18-21 June at the Orthodox Academy of Crete in Kolymbari under the auspices of His-All Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Orthodox conference interprets findings of the Holy and Great Council

One hundred-and-twenty hierarchs and academic theologians, clergy, laity and young researchers, men and women from 25 universities and theological institutes and 15 countries participated as speakers at the 8th International Conference of Orthodox Theology in Thessaloniki on 21-24 May, organized by the Faculty of Theology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) under the auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate with the title: "The Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church: Orthodox Theology in the 21st Century.”

Consensus, collaboration emphasized at WCC meeting in Greece
