Les religions du monde entier aspirent à la paix. Pourtant, il est malheureusement établi qu'elle sont bien souvent impliquées dans des conflits et dans la violence. Ce paradoxe a fait l'objet d'une intense discussion lors d'un colloque interreligieux sur la violence, la paix et les religions qui s'est tenu au mois de juin. Ce colloque rassemblait quarante participants (juifs, musulmans, hindous, bouddhistes et chrétiens, venus d'Europe, d'Asie, d'Afrique, du Moyen-Orient, d'Amérique du Nord et du Sud) réunis pendant huit jours à l'Institut œcuménique de Bossey (Conseil œcuménique des Eglises, COE), près de Genève. Eliminer la violence, ont-ils affirmé, est une tâche qui interpelle toutes les religions. Ce colloque était le premier d'une série consacrée à la question des religions et de la violence que doit organiser l'Institut œcuménique.

The world’s religions aspire to peace. However it is a sad fact that they are often involved in conflict and violence. This paradox was the subject of intense discussion at a multi-faith consultation on violence, peace and religions held in June. Forty participants – Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians from Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, North and South America – gathered for eight days at the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Institute at Bossey, near Geneva. The elimination of violence, they declared, is a challenge to all religions. The consultation was the first in a series on the topic of religions and violence to be organized by the Ecumenical Institute.

Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), will lead a delegation to the Horn of Africa, 1-16 July. The main purpose of the visit is to learn more about the ongoing conflicts in the region and the peace-building role churches can play. Raiser notes that a major need is "to reflect with the churches on the challenge of Christians and Muslims living together without their differences turning into sources of conflict". The delegation will visit northern and southern Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Tanzania and Kenya.

Le pasteur Konrad Raiser, secrétaire général du Conseil oecuménique des Eglises (COE), conduira, du 1er au 16 juillet, une délégation dans les pays de la Corne de l'Afrique. L'objectif principal de cette visite est de mieux comprendre les conflits en cours dans la région et de voir quel pourrait être le rôle des Eglises dans l'instauration de la paix. Konrad Raiser considère qu'il est avant tout nécessaire de "réfléchir avec les Eglises à l'exigence que constitue, pour les chrétiens et les musulmans, le fait de vivre ensemble sans que leurs différences deviennent des occasions de conflit". La délégation se rendra au Soudan (nord et sud), en Ethiopie et en Erythrée, ainsi qu'en Tanzanie et au Kenya.

Dr Jesse Jackson, on a visit today to the Geneva offices of the World Council of Churches (WCC), met with WCC general secretary Konrad Raiser for an exchange of views about an interreligious initiative on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Jackson's proposed initiative hopes to mobilize religious leaders in advocating active non-violent approaches to peace, justice, and reconciliation in the region. To this effect, a visit of a delegation of Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders to Palestine and Israel is being considered.

Une fois encore, la Commission spéciale sur la participation des orthodoxes au Conseil oecuménique des Eglises (COE) va se réunir du 27 mai au 2 juin à Järvenpää, non loin d'Helsinki, capitale de la Finlande. La Commission présentera les conclusions de ses travaux des trois dernières années en un rapport final lors du Comité central du COE qui siégera cette année du 26 août au 3 septembre à Genève.

The Special Commission on Orthodox Participation in the World Council of Churches (WCC) will shortly hold its final plenary meeting. The Commission will meet 27 May - 2 June in Järvenpää, Finland, not far from Helsinki. The results of three years of work will be presented by the Special Commission in a final report to the WCC Central Committee, which meets this year 26 August - 3 September in Geneva, Switzerland.
