The Romani people, also known as the Roma, migrated from northwest India 1,500 years ago. Once they arrived in Europe, they spread across the continent from the Balkan region. Now Romani live worldwide, though principally in Europe.

At a time of increased divisions within churches and within rapidly changing societies, Christians are called, more urgently than ever before, to model the values of reconciliation, justice and peace. That’s why a group of theologians and church leaders from different denominations have been meeting near the German city of Augsburg to work together on two documents calling for much closer collaboration in the tasks of peace-building and the care of migrants and refugees.

The leaders of the Joint Working Group (JWG) between the Roman Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches met 24-27 May in Targoviste, Romania, to discuss cooperation in peace building and the ecumenical challenge and opportunity posed by migrants and refugees.

The 2016 text explores challenges and changes in the European church landscape in light of international migration.

Meeting from 17 to 24 June, the newly reconstituted Commission on Faith and Order of the WCC has begun to define its principal trajectories for ecumenical study and common activity from 2015 until the next WCC Assembly in 2020.

Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church interacted with the Faith and Order Commission of the WCC on 22 June during their week-long meeting at the Caraiman Monastery in the southern Carpathian Mountains of Romania.

At its first meeting after being reconstituted following the 10th Assembly of the WCC, the 49-member Faith and Order Commission has elected five vice-moderators to assist the commission’s moderator, British theologian Rev. Dr Susan Durber of the United Reformed Church in the United Kingdom.

Lors de sa première réunion suivant sa reconstitution suite à la 10e Assemblée du COE, la Commission de Foi et constitution, forte de 49 membres, a élu cinq vice-présidents chargés d’assister la présidente de la Commission, la pasteure britannique Susan Durber, théologienne de l’Église réformée unie au Royaume-Uni. La pasteure Durber avait été élue à la présidence de la Commission de Foi et constitution par le Comité central du COE en 2014.

On a visit to Romania from 16 to 18 June during which he addressed a meeting of the Faith and Order Commission, WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit paid formal visits to Romanian President Klaus Werner Johannis, and Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Lors d’une visite en Roumanie, du 16 au 18 juin, à l’occasion de laquelle il s’est adressé à une réunion de la Commission de Foi et constitution du COE, le pasteur Olav Fykse Tveit, secrétaire général du COE, a rendu une visite officielle au président roumain Klaus Werner Johannis et au patriarche Daniel, de l’Église orthodoxe roumaine.

Deeply concerned for migrants in many regions, especially those “driven to undertake journeys of desperate risk and danger”, the WCC Executive Committee has declared: “All members of the international community have a moral and legal duty to save the lives of those in jeopardy at sea or in transit, regardless of their origin and status.”
