The World Council of Churches (WCC) offers its congratulations to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as Nobel Peace Prize laureate 2019. Since his election as Prime Minister in April 2018, Mr Ahmed has championed an impressive programme of positive and inspiring reform initiatives, and played a decisive role in the reconciliation of the two synods and fostered unity of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The achievement which this award particularly recognizes is his leadership in bringing an formal end to the twenty-year long fratricidal conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Le Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE) transmet ses félicitations au Premier ministre éthiopien Abiy Ahmed, lauréat du prix Nobel de la paix 2019. Depuis son élection comme Premier ministre en avril 2018, M. Ahmed a pris la tête d’un impressionnant projet d’incitatives de réformes positives et stimulantes et a joué un rôle décisif dans la réconciliation des deux synodes, tout en favorisant l’unité de l’Église orthodoxe Tewahedo d’Éthiopie. Ce prix reconnaît plus particulièrement son rôle d’impulsion dans la résolution formelle du conflit fratricide qui oppose l’Éthiopie et l’Érythrée depuis vingt ans.

Dr. Nigussu Legesse shared in the joy a year ago when the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church declared an end to a 27-year-old schism that had torn it apart. That rapprochement set in motion a series of events that are taking him back to his homeland.
Legesse was then World Council of Churches (WCC) programme executive and convener for Africa.
After more than 10 years at the council, he is moving back to Addis Ababa as executive director of the Consortium of Christian Relief and Development Associations.

With a prayer service on Ash Wednesday in Sealite Mihret Orthodox cathedral in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the WCC's Ecumenical Water Network began its annual Lenten campaign “Seven Weeks for Water”. This year during Lent it will raise awareness of water justice issues in Africa.

A delegation from the WCC, led by WCC Central Committee moderator Dr Agnes Abuom, visited Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 21-22 October as an expression of solidarity to the member churches there. The delegation met with leaders of member churches, members of the Ethiopian interfaith council, and government representatives.

Les 21 et 22 octobre, une délégation du COE, conduite par la présidente du Comité central du COE, Mme Agnes Abuom, s’est rendue à Addis-Abeba, en Éthiopie, en signe de solidarité avec les Églises membres de ce pays. La délégation a rencontré des responsables des Églises membres, des membres du Conseil interreligieux de l’Éthiopie et des représentants du gouvernement.

Between 7-27 March, more than 100 images with the hash tag #7Weeks4Water were posted by Instagram users who joined the World Council of Churches (WCC) contest. Most of them told stories about water justice, illustrating the Lenten campaign “Seven Weeks for Water,” promoted by the WCC Ecumenical Water Network annually since 2008.
