Dans des lettres pastorales adressées à Sa Toute Sainteté le Patriarche Bartholomée, à Sa Béatitude Jérôme II, archevêque d’Athènes et de toute la Grèce, et à l’Église évangélique de Grèce, le Secrétaire général du Conseil œcuménique des Églises, le pasteur Jerry Pillay, a exprimé toute sa sincère compassion envers les victimes des incendies qui font rage en Grèce.

Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay conveyed sincere sympathies as wildfires raged across the land.

Archbishop Job of Telmessos, who serves as permanent representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the World Council of Churches (WCC), met with the WCC News and describes receiving an extraordinary gift from Pope Francis on 29 June.

Following the EU-Turkey refugee agreement, effective 20 March 2016, the Greek islands are again a changed place. Where refugees have arrived in great numbers in the past years, and where they have engaged a whole community of local, national and international aid workers and volunteers, the situation is now dramatically different.

Depuis l’entrée en vigueur de l’accord UE-Turquie sur les réfugiés, le 20 mars 2016, les îles grecques ont connu de nouveaux changements. Sur ces îles où les réfugiés sont arrivés nombreux au cours des dernières années, et où toute une communauté de travailleurs humanitaires et de bénévoles locaux, nationaux et internationaux avait été mobilisée, la situation est désormais complètement différente.

In view of the current refugee crisis, European churches are being encouraged to deepen their efforts in receiving, supporting and protecting refugees who arrive in the region. This call was made in a letter issued jointly by the WCC, the Conference of European Churches and the Churches’ Commission for Migrants in Europe.

Dans le contexte de l’actuelle crise des réfugiés, les Églises sont encouragées à intensifier leurs efforts afin de mieux recevoir, soutenir et protéger les réfugiés et réfugiées qui arrivent dans la région. Cet appel a été lancé dans une lettre publiée conjointement par le Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE), la Conférence des Églises européennes (KEK) et la Commission des Églises auprès des migrants en Europe (CEME).

In the wake of recent crisis with the refugees in Europe, it is “absolutely and critically necessary that all European states take their proper responsibility in terms of reception and support for people seeking refuge, safety and a better future for themselves and their families. This cannot be left only to the states where they enter first,” says the WCC general secretary.

Describing dramatic consequences of the Syrian civil war, Bishop Elia Toumeh of Marmarita said that when the difficulties pass, Christians must play a constructive role in the reconciliation of opposing factions for a new Syrian society.

“Faith and Order has a long and significant history in the life of the ecumenical movement. Its two convergence texts, 'Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry' and now 'The Church: Towards a Common Vision', provide our member churches with the necessary theological tools towards the full communion of our common fellowship,” said Metropolitan Prof. Dr Gennadios of Sassima. Metropolitan Gennadios serves as vice-moderator of the WCC Central Committee.
