En medio de una de las peores crisis de salud pública del mundo, los cristianos de Brasil mantienen su tradición de celebrar la Semana de Oración por la Unidad de los Cristianos en vísperas de Pentecostés. Por segundo año, se reunirán en oración aunque sin encuentros físicos.

In the midst of one of the worst public health crises in the world, Christians in Brazil are upholding their tradition of celebrating the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in the lead up to Pentecost. For the second year, they will be gathering in prayer without physical gatherings though. 

The new surge in COVID-19 related hospitalizations and deaths has drastically increased the need for pastoral care almost everywhere. Brazil and Great Britain are two hard-hit countries, where the pandemic has brought existential questions on the table.  

One of the most active groups of "La Casona", a care center in the southern part of Buenos Aires, is the “Centro de Producción Audiovisual”, which is formed by eight young people of ages 16-22 who found in the cinema and audiovisual production a tool to express their feelings about the challenging reality around them. Last August, they received a visit by a group led by Frederique Seidel, World Council of Churches (WCC) special adviser on Child Rights.

Uno de los grupos más activos de “La Casona”, un centro asistencial de la parte sur de Buenos Aires, es el “Centro de Producción Audiovisual”, que está formado por ocho jóvenes de entre 16 y 22 años que encontraron en el cine y la producción audiovisual una herramienta para expresar sus sentimientos sobre la difícil realidad que los rodea. El pasado mes de agosto, recibieron la visita de un grupo dirigido por Frédérique Seidel, asesora especial del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) sobre los Derechos del Niño.

Churches, civil society organisations and almost 100 children and adolescents - many of whom experience poverty and violence daily - attended a consultation on 11 August organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC) in the town of Pilar, north of the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Iglesias, organizaciones de la sociedad civil y casi cien niños y adolescentes –muchos de los cuales padecen diariamente la pobreza y la violencia– asistieron el 11 de agosto a una consulta organizada por el Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) en la ciudad de Pilar, al norte de Buenos Aires (Argentina).

“What?! You are going to the Barrio Borro? Sorry, I can’t drive you there, and no other taxi driver will do that for you. It is too dangerous to go there.” These were the reactions Frederique Seidel heard when she revealed her intention to visit the Obra Ecuménica Barrio Borro, in Uruguay.

“¡¿Qué?! ¿Va al Barrio Borro? Disculpe, pero no puede llevarla y ningún otro taxista lo hará. Es demasiado peligroso ir allí.” Esas fueron las reacciones que suscitó Frederique Seidel cuando dijo que tenía la intención de visitar la Obra Ecuménica Barrio Borro o el proyecto de apoyo ecuménico en dicho barrio de Montevideo, Uruguay.
