Nach dem Inkrafttreten des Flüchtlingsabkommens zwischen der EU und der Türkei am 20. März 2016 sind die griechischen Inseln wieder wie ausgewechselt. Wo in den vergangenen Jahren große Zahlen von Flüchtlingen ankamen und diese eine ganze Gemeinschaft von lokalen, nationalen und internationalen Helfern und Freiwilligen mobilisierten, ist die Situation heute komplett verändert.

Following the EU-Turkey refugee agreement, effective 20 March 2016, the Greek islands are again a changed place. Where refugees have arrived in great numbers in the past years, and where they have engaged a whole community of local, national and international aid workers and volunteers, the situation is now dramatically different.

Mit Blick auf die gegenwärtige Flüchtlingskrise sollen die europäischen Kirchen ihre Anstrengungen bei der Aufnahme, der Unterstützung und dem Schutz von Flüchtlin¬gen, die in der Region ankommen, weiter verstärken. Dazu haben der ÖRK, die Konferenz Europäischer Kirchen und die Kommission der Kirchen für Migranten in Europa in einem gemeinsam verfassten Brief aufgerufen.

In view of the current refugee crisis, European churches are being encouraged to deepen their efforts in receiving, supporting and protecting refugees who arrive in the region. This call was made in a letter issued jointly by the WCC, the Conference of European Churches and the Churches’ Commission for Migrants in Europe.

In the wake of recent crisis with the refugees in Europe, it is “absolutely and critically necessary that all European states take their proper responsibility in terms of reception and support for people seeking refuge, safety and a better future for themselves and their families. This cannot be left only to the states where they enter first,” says the WCC general secretary.

Describing dramatic consequences of the Syrian civil war, Bishop Elia Toumeh of Marmarita said that when the difficulties pass, Christians must play a constructive role in the reconciliation of opposing factions for a new Syrian society.

“Faith and Order has a long and significant history in the life of the ecumenical movement. Its two convergence texts, 'Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry' and now 'The Church: Towards a Common Vision', provide our member churches with the necessary theological tools towards the full communion of our common fellowship,” said Metropolitan Prof. Dr Gennadios of Sassima. Metropolitan Gennadios serves as vice-moderator of the WCC Central Committee.
