The inclusion of Bolivia's "indigenous peoples in social and political life" is one of the requisite steps "for the construction of meaningful and true democracy" in the country, the World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia affirmed in a letter to the churches of Bolivia today, 3 June.

Aboriginal representatives of Canadian churches, devastated by residential school scandals which have resulted in lawsuits against them totaling millions of dollars, told Rev. Dr Sam Kobia, WCC general secretary, that they must work together ecumenically if they are to bring hope and healing to the country’s First Nations, most of whom have had church connections for centuries.

+ Ecumenical leaders discuss future of ecumenism

On his first trip to the Asia and Pacific regions since taking office, WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia will visit member churches and ecumenical organizations in Hong Kong, Australia and Fiji from 5 to 15 July. Kobia will also spend time with refugees, asylum-seekers and indigenous communities in Australia, and focus on HIV/AIDS in the Pacific.
