World Council of Churches acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca extended warmest congratulations to His Holiness Abune Kerlos I, Patriarch of Eritrea upon his election as the fifth Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church.

The ecumenical staff gathered with people from Zimbabwe and Botswana on 14 June for a morning prayer and song that focused on the church as a place of refuge and trust.

The WCC’s executive committee has welcomed recent reconciliations in Ethiopia and Eritrea. In a statement issued from its 2-8 November meeting in Uppsala, Sweden, the committee also invited further support from member churches for further efforts there.

El Comité Ejecutivo del CMI ha valorado positivamente las recientes reconciliaciones en Etiopía y Eritrea. En una declaración publicada desde su reunión del 2 al 8 de noviembre en Uppsala (Suecia), el comité invitó asimismo a las iglesias miembros a mostrar su apoyo a nuevos esfuerzos en la región.

Most South Africans know of Brigalia Bam as chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), where she served from 1999 to 2011. Previously secretary general of the South African Council of Churches, and already an IEC commissioner, she was chosen by then-President Nelson Mandela from the list of parliamentary nominees for this critical role. In a country that had recently been on the brink of racial civil war, she guided South Africans with humour, tolerance and impartiality along the path of inclusive democracy.

Eine Delegation des ÖRK hat der Eritreisch-Orthodoxen Kirche Tewahedo, einer der ältesten christlichen Kirchen Afrikas, die auf das Jahr 329 n. Chr. zurückgeht, einen Solidaritätsbesuch abgestattet. Es war der erste Besuch dieser Art seit mehr als 10 Jahren, und der ÖRK versprach beim Abschied, Eritrea und Äthiopien bei ihren Bemühungen, ihren Grenzkonflikt beizulegen, mit Gebet und Maßnahmen für den Frieden zur Seite zu stehen.

A delegation from the WCC concluded a solidarity visit to the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, one of Africa’s oldest Christian churches dating back to the year AD 329. It was the first such visit in more than 10 years and the WCC left with a pledge to pray and work for peace between Eritrea and its neighbor Ethiopia as they attempt to resolve a border dispute.

Una delegación del CMI concluyó una visita de solidaridad a la Iglesia Ortodoxa Tewahedo de Eritrea, una de las iglesias más antiguas de África, cuyo origen se remonta al año 329. Fue la primera vez en más de diez años que tuvo lugar una visita de esta índole y el CMI se fue del país con la promesa de orar y trabajar por la paz entre Eritrea y su vecino Etiopía en sus intentos por resolver la controversia fronteriza que los enfrenta.

Une délégation du COE a effectué une visite de solidarité auprès de l’Église orthodoxe Tewahedo d’Érythrée, l’une des plus anciennes Églises chrétiennes d’Afrique, fondée en l’an 329 de notre ère. Il s’agissait de la première visite de ce type depuis plus de dix ans, et en partant, le COE a promis de prier et d’œuvrer pour la paix entre l’Érythrée et son voisin l’Éthiopie, alors que les deux pays tentent de résoudre un différend frontalier.

The first ever WCC Eco-School on Water, Food and Climate Justice will be held 24 July to 3 August, hosted by the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian Blantyre Synod. Applications are now open with a deadline of 11 June (deadline extended).

In diesem Sinne ist das Recht auf eine Staatsangehörigkeit eine Frage des Zugangs zum Schutz durch alle anderen Menschenrechte – sozusagen das Recht, Rechte zu haben“, sagte Peter Prove, Direktor der Kommission der Kirchen für internationale Angelegenheiten des ÖRK, nach einem regionalen Workshop zum Thema Geburtenregistrierung und geschlechtsdiskriminierendes Staatsangehörigkeitsrecht in Afrika, der vom ÖRK vom 11.-13. Mai in Addis Abeba (Äthiopien) abgehalten wurde.

“Statelessness renders people’s vulnerability to abuse and to denial of their rights invisible to national authorities. In this sense the right to a nationality is a threshold issue for access to protection of all other human rights - almost a 'right to have rights'”, said Peter Prove, director of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA), following a regional training workshop on birth registration and gender discriminatory nationality laws in Africa, organized by the WCC in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 11–13 May.

“La apatridia hace que la vulnerabilidad de las personas a los abusos y la denegación de sus derechos sea invisible para las autoridades nacionales. En este sentido, el derecho a una nacionalidad es primordial para el acceso a la protección de todos los otros derechos humanos, se trata casi de un ‘derecho a tener derechos’”, dijo Peter Prove, director de la Comisión de las Iglesias sobre Asuntos Internacionales del CMI, tras un taller regional de capacitación sobre el registro de nacimientos y las leyes de nacionalidad discriminatorias por motivos de género en África, organizado por el CMI en Addis Abeba (Etiopía) del 11 al 13 de mayo.

«L’apatridie rend invisible aux yeux des autorités nationales la vulnérabilité des personnes face aux abus ou à la négation de leurs droits. En cela, le droit à une nationalité est un enjeu fondamental pour l’accès à la protection de tous les autres droits humains. Il s’agit presque d’un "droit d’avoir des droits"», a déclaré Peter Prove, directeur de la Commission des Églises pour les affaires internationales du COE, après un atelier régional de formation traitant de l’enregistrement des naissances et des lois sur la nationalité qui entraînent une discrimination en fonction du sexe. Cet atelier était organisé par le COE à Addis-Abeba (Éthiopie) du 11 au 13 mai.

The WCC has acknowledged with regret and sympathy the news of the death of Diyoskoros, Eritrean Orthodox bishop of Seraye, following the announcement of his passing on 21 December by the Eritrean government’s ministry of information.
