WCC extends sympathy to South Korea in wake of record flooding

World Council of Churches acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca extended greetings and sympathy to the many in South Korea affected by record heavy rainfall—the most in 115 years. The deluge battered Seoul and caused damage throughout the central and eastern regions in South Korea.

Durante una reciente visita de solidaridad a Ucrania, una delegación del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) se reunió con varias instituciones estatales que trabajan en temas religiosos para escuchar y aprender de los testimonios de las víctimas de la guerra actual, y pedir apoyo para que los miembros de la delegación de las iglesias ucranianas obtengan permiso para salir del país y poder participar en la 11ª Asamblea del CMI en Karlsruhe (Alemania).

During the recent solidarity visit in Ukraine, a World Council of Churches (WCC) delegation has met with various state institutions working with religious issues, listening and learning from the victims of the ongoing war and asking for support in giving permission to the members of the delegation of Ukrainian Churches to leave the country and attend the WCC 11th Assembly in Karlsruhe.

Lamentando la guerra ilegal e injustificable “infligida al pueblo y al Estado soberano de Ucrania”, el Comité Central del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias, denunció “los terribles y crecientes niveles de muerte, destrucción y desplazamientos forzosos; la destrucción de las relaciones entre los pueblos de la región y la intensificación —como nunca antes— del antagonismo profundamente arraigado entre ellos; la confrontación en aumento a nivel mundial; el mayor riesgo de hambruna en las regiones del mundo que sufren de inseguridad alimentaria; las dificultades económicas y el agravamiento de la inestabilidad social y política a nivel mundial”.

Deploring the illegal and unjustifiable war inflicted on the people and sovereign state of Ukraine” the World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee lamented the awful and continuing toll of deaths, destruction and displacement, of destroyed relationships and ever more deeply entrenched antagonism between the people of the region, of escalating confrontation globally, of increased famine risk in food insecure regions of the world, of economic hardship and heightened social and political instability in many countries.”

On the International Day of Living Together in Peace declared by the United Nations, members of the World Council of Churches (WCC) fellowship from countries troubled by war and conflict gathered to pray for sustainable peace in the world.

WCC expresses grave concern over COVID-19 outbreak in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

World Council of Churches (WCC) acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca expressed grave concern about a major humanitarian crisis following the emergence of COVID-19 in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK). Authorities have acknowledged the deaths of at least 50 people and that 1.2 million suspected cases – or almost 5% of the entire population – are being monitored.
