The World Council of Churches (WCC) is holding Norway in prayer and concern after the nation was struck by the most powerful storm in a generation.

A group of bikers from the Bike for Peace visited the World Council of Churches on 30 August as part of a commemoration in the Place de Nations. 

Speaking in Bergen, Norway at an international conference on Sustainability and Climate in Re-ligion organized by the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, The Church of Norway and The Council for Religious and Life Stance Communities in Norway, World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit offered reflections on “What’s love got to do with it? Climate justice and care for the earth.”

S’exprimant à Bergen, en Norvège, à l’occasion de la conférence internationale sur la durabilité et les changements climatiques dans la religion, organisée par l’université de Norvège occidentale en sciences appliquées, l’Église de Norvège et le Conseil pour les communautés religieuses et philosophiques de Norvège, le secrétaire général du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE), le pasteur Olav Fykse Tveit, a fait part de ses réflexions autour de la question: «En quoi l’amour est-il concerné? La justice climatique et le souci de la planète».

Bishop Ingeborg Midttømme, from the Church of Norway, serves at the diocese of Møre, in the northwestern part of the Scandinavian country. She is also a board member of Norwegian Church Aid. Over the past years, she has been an active participant in international events that focus on the global agenda on sustainable development, such as the United Nations annual climate conferences.

Pilgrims coming from Germany, Italy and Norway ended their journeys for climate justice on 7 December upon arrival at the St Stephen’s Church in Katowice, Poland, where the United Nations (UN) climate conference is underway. They were warmly welcomed by the delegations of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) that are attending the 24th Conference of Parties of UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24).

Dr. Agnes Abuom, moderator of the WCC Central Committee, offered a speech entitled “A Clarion Christian Call to Justice and Peace: Ending Global Inequality and Climate injustice” at the Justice Conference in Oslo, Norway on 9 November.

“Now is the time for someone to take action, to start building that bridge. It is possible, if we all contribute our part,” said WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit in Oslo, Norway on 17 February. Speaking at a convention of union members and political leaders, Tveit offered the final reflection on a day under the theme ”Bridges to the future”.

World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit preached on New Year’s Day in the Church of Ås in Norway. Tveit not only observed the first day of 2017 but also commemorated the 150th anniversary of Ås Church, as well as 500 years of Reformation.

Green Cross International has launched a new edition of The Future We Want photo exhibition for 2016 at the United Nations in Geneva. It features a number of its new partner organizations from around the world, including the WCC.

Encouragement, inspiration and storytelling animated the plenary discussion of the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace.

Following the WCC/UN High Level Conference on the Refugee Crisis in Europe, which took place at the Ecumenical Centre Geneva on 18-19 January, a statement has been issued entitled "Europe’s Response to the Refuge Crisis, From Origin to Transit, Reception and Refuge, A Call for Shared Responsibility and Coordinated Action”.

À l’issue d’une conférence de haut niveau sur la crise des réfugiés en Europe, organisée par le COE et des agences onusiennes au Centre œcuménique de Genève les 18 et 19 janvier, une déclaration a été produite, intitulée «La réponse de l’Europe à la crise des réfugiés et des migrants – Départ, transit, accueil et refuge: un appel au partage des responsabilités et à la coordination des actions».

“The political leaders of the world are speaking like preachers. May they continue as believers,” said the WCC general secretary at the opening of the UN climate talks in Paris.

«Les dirigeants politiques de la planète s’expriment comme des prédicateurs. Puissent-ils rester croyants», a dit le pasteur Olav Fykse Tveit, secrétaire général du COE, à l’ouverture le 30 novembre à Paris des pourparlers de l’ONU sur le climat (COP21).

World leaders will meet at the crucial United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21) in Paris from 30 November to 11 December. Faith groups around the world are building awareness of the importance of reaching a binding and ambitious agreement at the talks. In October, WCC members have taken part in climate activities in Germany.
