The National Christian Council of Sri Lanka, in a statement, expressed its strong opposition to a proposed Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) which aims to replace the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

El secretario general del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, visitó Sri Lanka los días 24 y 25 de abril, reuniéndose con el Consejo Cristiano Nacional de Sri Lanka, dirigentes de iglesias, teólogos y funcionarios gubernamentales para hablar de su profunda contribución al movimiento ecuménico.

Bei dem Besuch kommt er mit dem Nationalen Kirchenrat von Sri Lanka, Kirchenleitenden, Theologinnen und Theologen sowie Regierungsvertreterinnen und Regierungsvertretern zusammen, um deren tiefgreifenden Beitrag zur ökumenischen Bewegung zu besprechen. 

Le secrétaire général du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE), le pasteur Jerry Pillay, s’est rendu au Sri Lanka les 24 et 25 avril à la rencontre du Conseil national chrétien du Sri Lanka, des responsables d’Églises, de théologien-ne-s et de représentant-e-s du gouvernement pour discuter de leur grande contribution au mouvement œcuménique. 

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay visits Sri Lanka on 24-25 April, meeting with the National Christian Council of Sri Lanka, heads of churches, theologians, and government officials to discuss their deep contribution to the ecumenical movement.

In a 29 April message, the Rt Rev. Dhiloraj Canagasabey, Anglican Bishop of Colombo in Sri Lanka and a member of the World Council of Churches Central Committee, reflected on the Easter Sunday violence in Christian churches in Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa and also in some hotels.

In the wake of the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka, the Omnia Institute for Contextual Leadership, based in Chicago, lifted up points of hope that peace will win in the end. In a 25 April message, Shanta Premawardhana, president of the institute, wrote that every person of every faith of every nation deserves to wake up in peace. “Every child deserves to feel safe, welcomed, and alive to the promise that each day brings,” Premawardhana wrote. “I'm sure you know that this is why we build Interfaith Peacemaker Teams in Sri Lanka.”

With deep shock and sorrow on this Easter Sunday the World Council of Churches (WCC) expresses its solidarity with the churches and people of Sri Lanka following the news of the bombings of churches and hotels which have claimed a reported 200 lives and injured many more.

“The seeds of peace come from the ground.” That is the vision that Rev. Dr Shanta Premawardhana, former director of Interreligious Dialogue and Cooperation at the World Council of Churches and now president of OMNIA Institute for Contextual Leadership, tries to follow with his organization.

“Congratulations for being a student at Bossey!” Fr Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca, director of the Ecumenical Institute in Bossey and deputy general secretary, welcomed the students for the new academic year 2018-2019. Thirty-one students from diverse countries and traditions will start their classes at the ecumenical institute on Tuesday.

Participants in a recent WCC consultation in Myanmar have stressed the need to equip churches and ecumenical organizations to build peace, human security and human dignity in order to move beyond conflicts, towards a world of peace.

Im Kontext von Spannungen, die oft durch religiöse Überzeugungen angeheizt werden, haben sich junge christliche, muslimische und jüdische Gläubige zu einer multireligiösen Gemeinschaft zusammengeschlossen. Im Rahmen des interreligiösen Sommerkurses, der vom ÖRK gefördert wird, will sich diese Gruppe gemeinsam für die Bewahrung der Schöpfung engagieren, ein Anliegen, das ihrer Meinung nach allen Glaubenstraditionen gemein ist.

Amidst the reality of tensions often fueled by religions, a group of Christian, Muslim and Jewish youth has formed a multi-faith community. As part of an interfaith summer course sponsored by the WCC, this community wants to work for the protection of creation – a concern they say is common to all faith traditions.

En un contexto de tensiones muchas veces relacionadas con los distintos grupos religiosos, un grupo de jóvenes cristianos, musulmanes y judíos ha creado una comunidad interreligiosa. En el marco del curso de verano "Construyendo una comunidad interreligiosa" organizado por el CMI, este grupo tiene el propósito de trabajar para el cuidado de la Creación, una preocupación que comparten todas las tradiciones religiosas.

Sur fond de tensions internationales souvent alimentées par les religions, un groupe composé de jeunes chrétiens, musulmans et juifs a constitué une communauté multireligieuse. Dans le cadre d'un cours d'été interreligieux organisé sous l'égide du COE, cette communauté veut œuvrer à la protection de la création, une préoccupation qui, selon eux, est partagée par toutes les traditions religieuses.

A communiqué adopted at a WCC consultation describes human trafficking as a “serious human rights violation” and its consequences are “most horrific results of the economic and social disparities that increase the vulnerability of millions of people”.

In an ecumenical consultation held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, called human trafficking a criminal activity, on rapid increase in the world. Ezeilo said that not a single country or entity has yet been able to stop this practice, and the magnitude of this problem is enormous.

The WCC will hold an international consultation exploring links between migration, human trafficking and modern slavery. The focus of the gathering concerns thousands of migrants faced with violence, abuse and exploitation during their perilous journeys as well as in the countries to which they migrate.
