A World Council of Churches delegation led by general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay has concluded its visit to Armenia after “witnessing dramatic events”.

On 28th August, during a visit with Ambassador Andranik Hovhannisyan, Permanent Mission of the Republic of Armenia to the UN Office, World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay expressed solidarity with those making efforts to lift the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh by reopening the Lachin corridor.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) is calling on Azerbaijan for the immediate lifting of the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh, as more than 120,000 people—including 30,000 children—are suffering under an increasingly dire humanitarian crisis.

In a letter to H.E. Zbigniew Rau, OSCE chairman-in-office, and minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, World Council of Churches acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca and Dr Jørgen Skov Sørensen, general secretary of the Conference of European Churches, jointly appeal for urgent action by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to promote a just and sustainable peace in the Caucasus, following renewed violence in the region in which more than 100 lives have already been lost.

At a conference to promote freedom of religion and preservation of spiritual, cultural and historical heritage, held at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin from 8-12 September, World Council of Churches (WCC) acting general secretary Rev. September, Berichten zufolge ausgelöst durch einen Angriff aserbaidschanischer Truppen. Die Folge sind Dutzende von Toten, darunter Zivilpersonen. Es besteht die Gefahr eines sich weiter ausbreitenden bewaffneten Konflikts in der Region.

World Council of Churches (WCC) interim general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca expressed grave concern over the renewed and very serious escalation of conflict in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region since Sunday 27 September – reportedly following an attack by Azerbaijan’s military forces – which has already resulted in dozens of casualties including civilians, and which risks provoking a wider armed conflict in the region.

El secretario general interino del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), Rev. Prof. Dr. Ioan Sauca, manifestó su profunda preocupación por la nueva y muy seria intensificación del conflicto en la disputada región de Nagorno Karabaj desde el domingo, 27 de septiembre –según se informa, después de un ataque por parte de las fuerzas militares de Azerbaiyán– que ya ha causado docenas de víctimas, incluidos civiles, y que amenaza con provocar un conflicto armado de mayores proporciones en la región.

Le secrétaire général par intérim du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE), le père Ioan Sauca, s’est dit très préoccupé par la nouvelle et très grave escalade du conflit dans la région contestée du Haut-Karabakh depuis le dimanche 27 septembre, qui aurait fait suite à une attaque des forces militaires azerbaïdjanaises. Le conflit a déjà fait des dizaines de victimes, dont des civils, et risque de provoquer un conflit armé plus étendu dans la région.

Salpy Eskidjian Weiderud, Leiterin des Büros für den religiösen Zweig des Friedensprozesses auf Zypern, wurde vom US Außenministerium mit dem Internationalen Preis für Religionsfreiheit ausgezeichnet. Dieser Preis „ist eine Anerkennung für Menschen, die sich in herausragender Weise für die Religionsfreiheit überall auf der Welt engagieren“, und wird am 17. Juli in Washington, D.C. überreicht.

Salpy Eskidjian Weiderud, leader of the Religious Track of the Cyprus Peace Process, has received an International Religious Freedom Award from the US Department of State. The awards “honor extraordinary advocates of religious freedom from around the world” and will be presented on 17 July in Washington, D.C.
