“WCC notes the concern expressed by Movimiento Ecuménico por los Derechos Humanos (MEDH) and many other civil society organizations in Argentina that Milagro Sala, a prominent political activist, social and indigenous leader, is being arbitrarily detained because of her activism, though other charges are laid against her”, wrote Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), in a letter on 16 December, to the Evangelical Methodist Church of Argentina (IEMA), in support of MEDH in its claim regarding Sala.

Faith-based organizations and religious leaders must be included in efforts to address the challenges of human trafficking and forced migration, representatives of the United Nations, international organizations, Member States and civil society have said.

It was with sadness that WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit received the news of the passing of Rev. Juan Abelardo Schvindt of the Evengelical Church of the River Plate (IERP), on 23 August.

“Bishop Pagura was one of the pillars of Latin American and world ecumenism in the last fifty years, a faithful and courageous champion of human rights and the cause of peace in Latin America and around the globe”, wrote Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), after the passing of Bishop Emeritus Federico José Pagura, on 6 June, in Argentina.

“Pagura fue uno de los pilares de Latinoamérica y del ecumenismo mundial a lo largo de los últimos cincuenta años, un leal y valiente defensor de los derechos humanos y de la causa de la paz en Latinoamérica y en el mundo entero”, escribió el Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, secretario general del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), después del fallecimiento del Obispo Emeritus Federico José Pagura el 6 de junio de 2016 en Argentina.

On March 24, Argentina commemorated the 40th anniversary of the military coup that lasted until 1983 and constituted a deep trauma in Argentina’s national history. Local member churches of the WCC and ecumenical organizations expressed their solidarity with the victims and stressed the importance of keeping the memory alive.

Aldo Etchegoyen, bishop emeritus of the Evangelical Methodist Church of Argentina (IEMA), died on 1 November in Buenos Aires, Argentina, leaving a legacy of strong commitment to human rights and the ecumenical movement. He was 86.

“Join the pilgrimage of justice and peace! Stand up for the creation that is threatened, for justice and peace, so that people may gain hope so that life will flourish. The most severe threat to basic human rights here in the next decades will be the dramatic effects of climate change. This is what eco-justice means.” This was a message the WCC general secretary conveyed at a public event of the Argentina Chancellery.

“¡Únanse a la peregrinación de justicia y paz! Defiendan la Creación que está amenazada, luchen por la justicia y la paz, para que la gente recupere la esperanza y prospere la vida”. Este fue el mensaje del Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit en un acto público de la Cancillería Argentina.

WCC support for churches’ struggles during the years of dictatorship in Argentina was praised by Aldo M. Etchegoyen, bishop emeritus of the Evangelical Methodist Church of Argentina.

El obispo emérito de la Iglesia Evangélica Metodista de Argentina, Aldo M. Etchegoyen, quien dio la bienvenida a Buenos Aires al Secretario General del CMI, el Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, y a la presidenta del CMI para América Latina y el Caribe, la Rev. To strengthen relationships and support churches in Latin America in their struggles for justice and peace, a pilgrimage of church leaders organized by the WCC will visit Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Colombia from 24 August to 7 September.

The WCC remembers today, 24 April, the 1.5 million Armenian victims – children, women and men – who died 100 years ago.

In significant events last week, the Evangelical Church of the River Plate and the Evangelical Church of the Lutheran Confession in Brazil, two member churches of the WCC, held leadership elections while reflecting on issues of diversity, communion and challenges posed by the emerging contexts of urban life in the region.

The theme “pilgrimage of justice and peace” has triggered robust discussions on furthering cooperation among Christian communication organizations in a seminar sponsored by the WCC. The seminar was held at the biannual assembly of the Latin American and Caribbean Agency of Communication in Argentina.

Indigenous peoples have a role to play in the struggle against climate change, indigenous faith leaders said during a panel at the Interfaith Summit on Climate Change held at the Church Center for the United Nations in New York City.
