World Council of Churches (WCC) moderator Dr Agnes Abuom was awarded the Plaque of Saint Eric by Church of Sweden primate Archbishop Antje Jackelén on 3 November.
Dr Abuom is currently visiting Uppsala, Sweden, together with the WCC Executive Committee, and received the award through a ceremony on 3 November, for her tireless work for visible unity among churches around the world.
“For exceptional contributions to and leadership in the ecumenical movement, especially through the World Council of Churches as well as long-standing faithful work for justice, peace and the life of the Church – on the African continent and globally, providing inspiration for women and men all over the world,” said Jackelén in her word of motivation.
The Plaque of Saint Eric, named after the 12th century Swedish king, is an honorary award given by the Archbishop of Church of Sweden to individuals in recognition of efforts for Christian unity, for peace and justice.
Upon receiving the award, Dr Abuom expressed gratitude and appreciation, with reference in particular to those who welcomed her to Sweden as she arrived there as a student, many years ago. ”These are the people who ignited me to be part of this ecumenical journey… Now let us all be pilgrims for justice, peace and unity,” Abuom said.
Also on the night, Margareta Grape of Church of Sweden – former director of the International Department in the Church of Sweden, and former WCC representative to the United Nations in New York – received the related Medal of Archbishop Stefan for outstanding contributions to the work and life of the church.
