Swiss president speaks with WCC general secretary during Oslo visit

The president of the Swiss Confederation, Doris Leuthard, met the Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit on Thursday 14 October during her state visit to Oslo, Norway. Tveit has been general secretary of the Geneva-based World Council of Churches (WCC) since January 2010 and is a minister in the Church of Norway. Tveit’s presence in Oslo at the invitation of the king of Norway provided him with an opportunity to greet the Swiss leader.

Young Muslims, Jews and Christians become peace facilitators

While peace is a commonly held value within Judaism, Islam and Christianity, other religious values can often become sources of conflict. In order to build community beyond faith boundaries a group of young adults from each of the three faith groups spent a week focusing on the common value of peace recently.

Congratulations to Rev. Dr Jerry Pillay, World Communion of Reformed Churches

The World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit has congratulated the Rev. Dr Jerry Pillay on his election as president of the World Communion of Reformed Churches. In a 7 July 2010 letter, Tveit highlighted the "ecumenical commitment" of Pillay, who is also the general secretary of the Uniting Presbyterian Church in South Africa. The WCC general secretary expressed expectations for "ever deeper conversations and cooperation" with the new world church body and its member churches.

Palestinian and Jewish activists call to work for peace

The plight of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation and the need to hold the Israeli State accountable under international law were highlighted at a roundtable hosted by the Palestine Israel Ecumenical Forum in Geneva, Switzerland on 31 May. The roundtable was one of the events marking the World Week for Peace in Palestine Israel.
