The World Council of Churches (WCC) and partner faith-based organizations convened on 29 April for a the side event entitled “A holistic, transformative approach to climate finance: Connecting the dots between climate finance, debt and tax reform” during the United Nations Economic and Social Council Financing for Development Forum. The event highlighted the interconnections between climate action, debt relief, and tax justice as essential components of climate finance mobilization.

World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay shared a message with the “Tax the super rich” campaign, being organized by Oxfam and Patriotic Millionaires, and running during the G20 conference in Brazil 12-19 November.

„Steuergerechtigkeit ist eine Sache des Glaubens“, sagte Suzanne Matale. „Der Glaube gibt [allen] Menschen das Recht auf ein Leben in Fülle. Auch gewöhnliche Menschen haben das Recht, informiert zu werden und einen Platz an den Verhandlungstischen zu bekommen, an denen Entscheidungen getroffen werden, die unsere von Gott gegebene Würde betreffen.“

“La justicia fiscal es una cuestión de fe”, afirmó Suzanne Matale. “Por la fe, [todas las personas] tienen derecho a la vida en abundancia. Los ciudadanos tienen derecho a estar informados y a participar en las mesas de toma de decisiones que afectan a la dignidad que Dios nos ha dado”.

«La justice fiscale est une question de foi», déclare Suzanne Matale. «La foi permet [à tous et à toutes] d’avoir la vie en abondance. Les personnes ordinaires ont le droit d’être informées et de participer aux prises de décision qui touchent à notre dignité donnée par Dieu».

“Tax justice is a matter of faith,” said Suzanne Matale. “By faith, [all] are entitled to abundant life. Ordinary people have a right to know and to participate in decision-making tables that affect our own God-given dignity.”

Tax justice, including reforming the current tax systems, enacting jubilee, and paying reparations, was the focus of the second 2020 Ecumenical School on Governance, Economics and Management public webinar held on 14 September.

A public online panel discussion—“In a Time of Pandemic, Inequality, and Climate Change: Zacchaeus Tax and Jubilee Now!”—will explore how taxation, reparations, and debt cancellation could contribute to shaping an Economy of Life in a world marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, widening socio-economic inequalities, and a growing climate emergency.
