WCC, KAICIID explore areas of cooperation

A delegation from the KAICIID Dialogue Centre – based in Lisbon – visited the World Council of Churches (WCC) on 22 October to explore areas of common interest and possible cooperation, with a particular focus on issues in the European region.

Consultation advocates for land as commons, not commodity

The World Council of Churches (WCC) co-organized a New International Financial and Economic Architecture Consultation on "Land as Commons, not Commodity" from 28-30 August 2024 in Limuru, Kenya. The event brought together nearly 60 theologians, faith actors, researchers, and land activists to explore faith-based responses to global land issues, emphasizing land's role as a commons, not a commodity.

Young People in the Ecumenical Movement Commission first in-person meeting

The WCC commission of Young People in the Ecumenical Movement (Youth Commission) “seeks to ensure that the prophetic voices of young people are present and heard within the WCC; and to empower young people through networking and ecumenical commitment on various levels”. The commission includes young people actively engaged in ecumenical activities, with some members also serving on the WCC central committee, executive committee and other WCC commissions.

Global institute convenes leaders in Kenya to reimagine a just economy

From 19-30 August, 27 church and youth leaders from 23 countries gathered in Limuru, Kenya, for the 7th edition of the Ecumenical School on Governance, Economics, and Management for an Economy of Life (GEM School). The participants included church leaders, pastors, theological students, finance, economics, and ecological justice experts.

On 12 August, young people across the world participated in the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical International Youth Day, which convened under the theme "Journey of Justice, Peace, and Unity: A Call to End Violence." The online event highlighted the experiences and resilience of young people and children living amidst conflict, emphasizing the urgent need for peace and support.

On August 12th, the United Nations observes International Youth Day. Since 2019, the World Council of Churches has introduced its own Ecumenical International Youth Day through the Youth Engagement desk. Throughout the years, the EIYD has addressed pertinent social issues for young people, such as mental health, issues with indigenous groups, and climate justice. Last year's theme focused on Young People’s Voices from the War zones.

Faith leaders advocate for economic justice at UN Preparatory Committee in Addis Ababa

A delegation from the World Council of Churches (WCC) attended the first United Nations Preparatory Committee (Prep Com) session for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) held in Addis Ababa 22-26 July. The delegation included Rev. Suzanne Matale and Brian Muyunga, who played key roles in advocating for fair financial systems and youth involvement.
