WCC General Recommendations for UN PFPAD Third Session (16-19 April 2024)

The World Council of Churches (WCC), a global fellowship of 352 churches representing more than half a billion Christians from around the world, has been deeply involved in the work of the United Nations from as early as 1946 through its Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA). The WCC is a platform for common action by churches on issues that negate or threaten the dignity of all people.

Linking with the theme of 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective”, this hybrid session will bring a range of perspectives to bear on the questions: What can we do to address extreme wealth concentration? How can taxing the richest in our societies as well as addressing corporate tax evasion serve to advance the goal of gender equity? And why should faith-based organisations care?

Rund 50 der 140 Kommunikatorinnen und Kommunikatoren, die 2022 bei der 11. Vollversammlung des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK) im deutschen Karlsruhe zusammengearbeitet hatten, feierten am 10. April online ein Wiedersehen, um in heiterer Runde ihre schönsten Erinnerungen Revue passieren zu lassen und einen ernsten Blick auf den Einfluss künstlicher Intelligenz auf ihre künftige Arbeit zu werfen.

Site Semanas por el Agua 2024: La Tierra que gime necesita la resurrección del “agua de la vida”

La última reflexión de la serie, Siete Semanas para el Agua 2024, de la Red Ecuménica del Agua del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), está escrita conjuntamente por la Revda. Audra Hudson Stone y Jacob Stone. Sostienen que las catástrofes naturales ya no son naturales, sino provocadas por el ser humano. Estas catástrofes son el gemido de la Tierra, que llama nuestra atención para que enmendemos nuestros actos. Los Stones tienen la esperanza de que, al igual que Jesús se liberó de las cadenas de la muerte, la Madre Tierra también se liberará de su desesperación, sufrimiento y muerte a través del “agua de la vida”: Jesucristo. Para ello, ¡tenemos que favorecer y practicar la “resurrección” de la Tierra!

Seven Weeks for Water 2024, final refection: "Groaning earth needs resurrection through 'water of life'"

The last reflection of the Seven Weeks for Water 2024 series of the WCC Ecumenical Water Network is jointly written by Rev. Audra Hudson Stone and Jacob Stone. They argue that natural disasters are not natural anymore; rather, they are human-induced. These disasters are the groaning of the earth, which is drawing our attention to mend our ways. The Stones are hopeful that, as Jesus rose from the shackles of death, the mother earth, too, will rise from its despair, suffering, and death through the “water of life”—Jesus Christ. To that end, we need to facilitate and practice “resurrection” of the earth!

Klimanotstandspodium befasst sich damit, wie Kirchen mit Glauben und Hoffnung reagieren können

Bei einer Podiumsdiskussion auf der Sitzung dreier Kommissionen des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK) am 5. März setzten sich die Vortragenden mit dem Thema „Klimanotstand—Reaktion der Kirchen im Glauben und mit Hoffnung“ auseinander. Die Podiumsdiskussion wurde von Erzbischof Hochwürden Julio Murray Thompson moderiert, der auch der Kommission für Klimagerechtigkeit und nachhaltige Entwicklung vorsteht, von der das Podium einberufen wurde.

During a panel discussion at the meeting of three World Council of Churches (WCC) commissions on 5 March, speakers explored the theme “Climate emergency—churches responding in faith and hope.” The panel was moderated by Archbishop Rev. Julio Murray Thompson, who also moderates the Commission on Climate Justice and Sustainable Development, which organized the panel.

Sometimes the pilgrims were a couple dozen people walking on the shoulder of a nondescript rural highway in freezing temperatures. Other times their ranks swelled into the hundreds, as they rallied in US cities including Philadelphia, Baltimore, and, finally, Washington, D.C., where, on 21 February, they urged President Biden to call for an end to the war in Palestine.

Treffen von Kirchenoberhäuptern aus Heiligem Land mit ÖRK, „allein Licht und Leben können wahrhaftig und langfristig bestehen“

Der Generalsekretär des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK), Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, ist am 17. Februar mit Jerusalemer Patriarchen und Kirchenoberhäuptern zusammengekommen; er würde „in dieser für alle Menschen in der Region und insbesondere für die christlichen Gläubigen im Heiligen Land schwierigen und komplizierten Zeit“ mit großer Dankbarkeit empfangen, wie es Seine Seligkeit Theophilos III, der Patriarch von Jerusalem, in seiner Begrüßungsansprache formulierte.
