WCC general secretary will visit Lebanon

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay will visit Lebanon from 19-22 March, to commemorate the 50th jubilee of the Middle East Council of Churches and meet with all WCC member churches from Lebanon and Syria. 

WCC sends condolences upon passing of Archbishop Mor Selwanos Boutros Al-Nehmeh

World Council of Churches interim general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca sent a letter of condolence to His Holiness Ignatius Aphrem II, patriarch of Antioch and all the East, and Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church, upon the passing of Archbishop Mor Selwanos Boutros Al-Nehmeh, archbishop of Homs, Hama, Tartous and Environs.

Fr Alexi - a peacemaker in Syria

Ecumenical delegation visits Iraq, addresses displacement of religious and ethnic minorities

An ecumenical delegation organized by the WCC was received by Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani of the Kurdistan Regional Government, on 28 September 2015 in Erbil. The ecumenical delegation had spent six days visiting the Kurdistan Region of Iraq – including the Duhok area, part of the Nineveh Plain, and Erbil – and represented the WCC at the 27 September enthronement of the new Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East, Mar Gewargis III, in Erbil.

WCC commission leadership selected

At the Central Committee meeting of the WCC, leadership of the Council’s consultative bodies was announced. These bodies will steer through the work of the WCC in accomplishing the call from its 10th Assembly to engage in a “pilgrimage of justice and peace”. The WCC assembly was held in the Republic of Korea in 2013.

Church in Syria provides aid to conflict victims

The Department of Ecumenical Relations and Development (DERD) of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East has delivered around 75,000 humanitarian aid kits to an estimate of 280,045 individuals in Syria amidst its on-going conflict.

An international group representing diverse mission organizations recently got together in India to develop tools that can ensure effective implementation of the new mission statement issued last year by the World Council of Churches (WCC).
