Por derecho, debería haber sido en África. La primera Asamblea del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) se celebró en Europa (Ámsterdam), la segunda en América del Norte (Evanston, EE. UU.) y la tercera en Asia (Nueva Delhi). Se esperaba que África fuera el siguiente continente en acoger al Consejo. Sin embargo, a lo largo de la década de 1960, en África brotaron actos de violencia y conflictos militares, de la región de Biafran, en Nigeria, a Zanzíbar y Eritrea; de Argelia a Mozambique y Rodesia. De manera que, la Cuarta Asamblea volvió a la “seguridad” de Europa, a Uppsala, en Suecia. En una de esas ironías de la historia, un mes después de la clausura de la Asamblea, los tanques soviéticos entrarían en Praga.

One hundred twenty-seven young people from over 50 countries in all eight regions served as stewards at the World  Council of Churches (WCC) 11^th Assembly providing essential assistance in all activities and areas as well as contributing energy and perspective to  our life together as an ecumenical fellowship. Two of the stewards assisting the WCC Communication team share their experience as a letter and diary to future stewards at the 12^th assembly.

When the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, churches had already been responding to humanitarian need in the country for eight years, since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.  The work being undertaken by churches in meeting the needs of those displaced by the war is not new, but the scale is staggering as 14 million people have been displaced in the six months since the invasion began.

The biblical ideal of welcoming the stranger is embedded in the ecumenical work of European churches. Despite restrained resources, they are at the forefront in supporting refugees.
