World Council of Churches Pastoral letter based on Pilgrim Team Visit to South Africa on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide and Xenophobia

As the world convenes in Bonn, Germany for the 23rd Conference of Parties (COP23) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Methodist Church in Fiji issued a statement calling for Methodists around the world to join in prayer for the country’s leadership and for the talanoa process of negotiations which will take place at COP23.

The WCC leadership will bring the letter to the next meeting of its Executive Committee in November 2017 in Amman, Jordan. The WCC also invited its members churches and partners worldwide to read and share the letter as a local voice from today’s Palestine.

With this letter issued at its Central Committee meeting in Trondheim, the WCC reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

In a letter to the Norway Christian Council, the general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, and the moderator of the WCC Central Committee, Rev. Dr Walter Altmann, expressed their "deep shock and sadness" concerning the attacks of 22 July 2011.

The WCC's constitution identifies the basis for, and the principles of membership, the purposes and functions, authority, and organization of the Council. Its rules give precise guidance concerning the roles, responsibilities and structure of the Council's various governing bodies, officers, committees, staff and partner organizations, the role of public statements, and the conduct of meetings. The constitution and rules will be submitted to the Assembly for amendment.
