Seven Weeks for Water 2025, week 1: "Sacred Waters: Honoring God’s Gifts in a Changing World"

The first reflection of the Seven Weeks for Water 2025 series of the WCC Ecumenical Water Network is written by Hella Tangu, a student of climate change studies from Uganda. In this reflection, she draws our attention to the importance of the glaciers, which are often not considered as a source of freshwater. She then challenges us to be mindful of how we use water, to take care of this precious resource as stewards of God’s creation, and to protect the glaciers, the ultimate source of freshwater on earth.

WCC shares vision for just transitions at Geneva Environment Network Roundtable

The World Council of Churches (WCC) joined diplomats, faith-based organizations, and leading experts at a roundtable discussion celebrating Geneva’s legacy in global environmental governance. Organized as part of the Geneva Environment Network's 25th-anniversary series of events, the discussion focused on the vital role of faith-based organizations in tackling the triple planetary climate change crisis, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

Beyond numbers: COP29 side event advocates for justice-driven climate finance

At the COP29 side event, Beyond numbers: A Dialogue on the New Collective Quantified Goal from Faith and Ethical Perspectives,” hosted by the Interfaith Liaison Committee, which the World Council of Churches (WCC) co-chairs, faith leaders and advocates called for a climate finance model rooted in justice and accountability. Speakers emphasized that effective climate finance must go beyond numbers to directly support the adaptation and resilience of communities facing the harshest climate impacts.

WCC calls for debt justice and wealth taxation at the UN Social Forum

At the recent United Nations Social Forum, the World Council of Churches (WCC) led global calls for a renewed economic system that prioritizes human rights and environmental sustainability. Held from 31 October to 1 November at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, the forum brought together representatives from governments, civil society, and academe to discuss the impact of finance on development and human rights. 

WCC commissioner leads call for faith-led environmental action at Ghana event

Kevin Maina, member of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Commission for Climate Justice and Sustainable Development, delivered a keynote address at the launch of the Environmental Integrity Project, organized by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, GA Presbytery. Invited by the Executive Council of the Young People’s Guild, Maina’s participation underscored the vital role of faith communities in addressing pressing environmental challenges.

WCC highlights urgency of ecotheology at conference in Sicily

The World Council of Churches (WCC) participated in the 7th Annual Conference of the European Academy of Religion (EuARE), held in Palermo, Italy from 20-23 May. This year's conference focused on paradigm shifts in religions, drawing over 1,100 participants to discuss important ecological and theological issues.
