WCC mourns passing of Fr. Leonid Kishkovsky

Protopresbyter Leonid Kishkovsky, a widely known and respected priest of the Orthodox Church in America, a prominent theologian and ecumenist, former member of the World Council of Churches (WCC) central and executive committees fell asleep in the Lord on the evening of 3 August at the age of 78.

More than 140 people met online in a spontaneous Gathering in Grief” to mourn Rev. Phumzile Mabizela, who passed away the morning of on 5 July. Mabizela was the executive director of INERELA+ (the International Network of Religious Leaders Living with or Personally Affected by HIV), co-moderator of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance HIV Campaign Strategy Group and a member of the International Reference Group of WCC Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiatives and Advocacy.

During his long career, Weber, who passed away on 18 October, made the Bible come alive for thousands of people through Bible studies that he coordinated with groups from many different cultures, contexts and situations.

WCC pays tribute to Günther Gassmann

"Günther Gassmann's life and work reflect the ecumenical ideals of theological reflection based deeply in careful historical understanding of the Christian tradition, combined with sincere and open-minded work to address and overcome the historic divisions within the church”, wrote the general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, upon the passing of Prof. Dr Günther Gassmann, on 11 January.

Memorial service pays tribute to Philip Potter

Traditional forms of Christian prayer and the music of Bob Marley blended neatly together in a chapel service honouring the memory of the Caribbean-born third general secretary of the WCC, the Rev. Dr Philip Potter who died in March at the age of 93. The service of common prayer, which drew many former colleagues and admirers, took place at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva on Monday 18 May.

WCC mourns Fr Emmanuel Lanne

The news of the death of Fr. Emmanuel Lanne has been received with great sadness, said the World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit in a 25 June condolence letter. A monk at the Monastery of Chevetogne, Belgium, Fr Lanne died on 23 June at the age of 86. "We will remember his committed and competent contribution to the search for the visible unity of the Church through his involvement in the Faith and Order Commission". Tveit added.
