AACC prayer call for Zimbabwe

The 9th General Assembly held in Maputo, Mozambique in December 2008 gave the African churches a strong mandate to continue their longstanding accompaniment of the Church and people of Zimbabwe. The Assembly declared January 25th an African Day of prayer for Zimbabwe. The call is to join our Zimbabwean sisters and brothers in prayer and in fasting, in words and in deeds, in contemplation and in action.

AACC Assembly statement on Zimbabwe

The AACC assembly adopted a statement of concern on Thursday 11 December on the crisis in Zimbabwe, expressing displeasure that "President Mugabe is using power-sharing negotiations as a strategy for wasting time" while "acts of violence continue to be committed against those who do not support ZANU-PF", Mugabe's ruling party. The will of the Zimbabwe people as expressed in March 2008 elections has been thwarted, the assembly said, and international leaders and churches "have failed to bring about an amicable solution".

Bropleh keynotes AACC Assembly

Liberian information minister Lawrence K. Bropleh spoke Monday on behalf of his country's president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, in a keynote address to the ninth assembly of the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC). He called on African churches to regain and reassert their vision of bold leadership against a backdrop of global financial meltdown and political instability.

Au Burundi, où les élections démocratiques de 2005 avaient suscité des espoirs de paix et de démocratie, une récente remontée de la criminalité et de la violence incite les Eglises à craindre pour la stabilité du pays. Une délégation oecuménique conduite par Joaquim Chissano, ancien président du Mozambique, a séjourné dans le pays du 28 au 31 janvier, à l'invitation du Conseil national des Eglises du Burundi. Avec la réussite du programme de désarmement au Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano s'est acquis l'estime de la communauté internationale.
