The Rev. Dr Anders Göranzon is the general secretary of the Swedish Bible Society. He has been an ordained priest in the Church of Sweden since 1987 and has served in different capacities as a parish priest and as a teacher of homiletics at the Church of Sweden Institute for Pastoral Education. He also worked for seven and a half years in South Africa. He holds a PhD in Ecclesiology from the University of the Free State in South Africa and has been an honorary lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.

 

East Jerusalem Initiative: accompanying families facing eviction and displacement

The World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) is beginning an East Jerusalem Initiative, through which the WCC-EAPPI is accompanying—even without a physical presence—families facing eviction and displacement, as well as people facing other violations of their rights. Below, WCC director of the Commission for the Churches on International Affairs Peter Prove explains the goals and history behind the East Jerusalem Initiative.

WCC calls for end to violence, urges respect of status quo of holy sites in Jerusalem

The World Council of Churches (WCC) condemns the violence at the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex during the night of Friday 7 May, in which more than 200 people are reported to have been wounded. Reacting to the news, WCC acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca called on Israel to respect the status quo of holy sites in Jerusalem’s Old City in the interest of peace and stability. We also call for all to refrain from further violence, and from provocative and destabilizing actions.”

With the death and burial of Prince Philipp, Duke of Edinburgh, and husband of Queen Elizabeth II, of the English and the British Commonwealth throne, a kind of Orthodox Christian witness came into the fore, in the form of Christian Brotherhoods, quite unknown to Greece and the entire Orthodox world. Very few till now in Greece had known that there is also another kind of Orthodox Christian witness, that of the socially oriented and pastorally significant Brother- (and Sister-) hoods, especially in periods of crisis.

WCC participates in dialogue on COVID-19 vaccines with WHO director general

World Council of Churches (WCC) acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca participated in a virtual “High-Level Dialogue on Multi-religious Response to COVID-19 Vaccine” on 19 March with Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as leaders from other religious groups.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) has requested correction of an article in the Algemeiner that listed the WCC among supporters of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS) against Israel.

The article, by Dexter Van Zile, appeared in the 10 February edition of the newspaper.

Tribute to Jonathan Sacks, a rabbi with “huge knowledge, deep wisdom, warm generosity”

‘Resist with all your heart and soul any attempt to substitute power for truth’ – so exhorted the late and widely lamented Jonathan Sacks in his most recent book, Morality: Restoring the Common Good in Divided Times (2020). Lord Sacks, who died on 7 November at the untimely age of 72, served as chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth from 1991 to 2013, and subsequently as chief rabbi emeritus.
