Churches to discuss their international advocacy work while UN meets in New York

UN reform, economic justice, the crisis in Sudan and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty will be the focus of this year’s World Council of Churches' (WCC) UN Advocacy Week, scheduled to take place from 14-19 November in New York City at the "Church Center" at the UN and the WCC's UN liaison office, with some seminars taking place in the United Nations building itself.

Church representatives debate reunification of North and South Korea

US Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry said in the recent televized debate with George Bush that he favours bilateral talks between America and North Korea. The president, on the other hand, said that he favours the Six-Party Talks on the peaceful reunification of a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.

Churches advocates speak about nonviolent presence in Palestine and Israel

The Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) will organize a hearing in New York City on "International nonviolent presence in Palestine and Israel: Churches and civil society promoting a just peace". The panel of speakers will include three EAPPI volunteers, from the USA, South Africa and Sweden.

Georgian Orthodox leader willing to resume collaboration with WCC

The head of the Georgian Orthodox Church has expressed his willingness to resume collaboration with the World Council of Churches (WCC) following the first meeting of senior staff of the ecumenical body with the leadership of the church since its withdrawal from WCC in 1997.

Interrogating and Redefining Power - A theological consultation

If violence is an exercise of power over the powerless or a retaliation to such, what makes power prone to abuse? Why do people not only fear but also aspire for sources of violent power? Why do some religious traditions view violence as a divine attribute? How is power understood and exercised within our churches? What biblical and theological resources do we have to offer in the search for responsible new ways of understanding and exercising power? Interrogating and redefining power is crucial to our attempts to overcome violence.
