Dr Elizabeth Joy was the first woman ever to be shortlisted as a nominee for the general secretary of the World Council of Churches. A director at Churches Together in England, she is from the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. She grew up in both India and the United Kingdom. Below, during an interview held the day after the WCC elections, she reflects on her roots in the ecumenical movement, and on her message to the WCC.

Declaración sobre las repercusiones humanitarias mundiales de la guerra en Ucrania

El conflicto en Ucrania sigue causando un terrible número de muertes, destrucción, desplazamientos y miseria para el pueblo ucraniano, y se ha informado de la muerte de miles de civiles y de que más de 14 millones de personas (más de una cuarta parte de toda su población) se han visto obligadas a huir de sus hogares. Además, esta guerra está teniendo repercusiones que van mucho más allá de las fronteras de Ucrania o de la región europea, produciendo un efecto de espiral descendente en una economía mundial ya abatida por la COVID-19 y la crisis climática. Los precios de los alimentos, los fertilizantes y la energía han aumentado rápidamente en muchos lugares del mundo, dado el importante papel que desempeñan Rusia y Ucrania en estos mercados.

Statement on global humanitarian impacts of the war in Ukraine

The conflict in Ukraine continues to cause a terrible toll of death, destruction, displacement and misery for the Ukrainian people, with thousands of civilians reported to have been killed, and more than 14 million people – well over a quarter of the entire population – forced to flee from their homes. In addition, the impacts of this war are being felt far beyond the borders of Ukraine or the European region, producing a downward spiral effect on a global economy already battered by COVID-19 and the climate crisis. Prices of food, fertiliser and energy have risen rapidly in many parts of the world, given the important roles played by Russia and Ukraine in these markets.

¿Qué mensaje escuchamos cuando rugen las olas de la juventud ecuménica?

El pasado 1 de abril, al dar comienzo el evento híbrido de presentación del libro “Let the waves roar” (“Que rujan las olas”) con objeto de dar a conocer de manera más profunda esta publicación de la juventud, el secretario general en funciones del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), Rev. Prof. Dr. Ioan Sauca, dio la bienvenida a todas las personas que participaron diciendo: “Estoy muy agradecido de contar con esta nueva publicación que incluye las perspectivas de jóvenes voces proféticas en el movimiento ecuménico, especialmente en estos momentos en los que se aproxima la celebración de la 11ª Asamblea”.

La sexta reflexión de las Siete Semanas por el Agua 2022 de la Red Ecuménica del Agua del CMI fue escrita por Dinesh Suna*. En la siguiente reflexión, brinda un contexto histórico del ministerio de justicia del agua del CMI y reafirma que el agua es un regalo de Dios, un bien común y un derecho humano. Inspirándose en Isaías, llama a las iglesias a convertirse en comunidades azules y a decir «no» a la privatización del agua y al agua embotellada.

What do we hear when the ecumenical youth roar?

As the hybrid book event on a deeper dive in the youth publication “Let the waves roar” commenced on 1 April, World Council of Churches (WCC) acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca welcomed everyone, saying: “I am so grateful to have the new publication with perspectives of young prophetic voices in the ecumenical movement, especially as we move toward the 11th assembly.”

Panellists and participants shared women-led and gender-just responses to the climate crisis as well as the role of churches and faith-based organisations.
