Voices on the ground: peace, social justice, and ethics—the way to the end of hunger

Halfway to the sustainable development goals, the latest UN indicators show a record increase in hunger. The World Food Programme and Food and Agriculture Organization report that 828 million people are hungry, an increase of 46 million from the previous year and an increase of 150 million people since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of people worldwide who cannot afford a healthy diet has increased by 112 million, reaching nearly 3.1 billion by 2020, the report said. Millions of people are at risk of falling into a vicious cycle of malnutrition, ill health, and poverty, exacerbating inequalities already visible to current and future generations.

Ukraine: Responding to humanitarian need

When the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, churches had already been responding to humanitarian need in the country for eight years, since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.  The work being undertaken by churches in meeting the needs of those displaced by the war is not new, but the scale is staggering as 14 million people have been displaced in the six months since the invasion began.

Eröffnungsandacht der ÖRK-Vollversammlung in Karlsruhe im Geist der Liebe Christi

Als die Glocken aller Karlsruher Kirchen läuteten, haben sich tausende Christinnen und Christen am Mittwoch, dem 31. August, im Gebetszelt im Herzen des Veranstaltungsorts der 11. Vollversammlung des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK) versammelt. Vertreterinnen und Vertreter aus allen acht geographischen Regionen der Welt, in denen der ÖRK aktiv ist, haben Gaben und Anliegen aus ihren eigenen kulturellen und historischen Kontexten mitgebracht. Die internationale Gemeinde betete und dankte Gott und äußerte sich zu ihren Erwartungen für die nächsten neun Tage der Vollversammlung: „Wir hoffen, dass wir einander begegnen können in der Liebe Christi, die uns umfasst und uns zu Versöhnung und Einheit bewegt.“

Building damaged by Russian bombs in Borodyanka village near Kyiv, Ukraine

Erklärung des ÖRK-Zentralausschusses zum Konflikt in der Ukraine: „Krieg mit all seinem Morden und allen anderen furchtbaren Folgen, die er mit sich bringt, ist nicht mit Gottes Natur vereinbar.“

Der Zentralausschuss des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK) verurteilt den illegalen und nicht zu rechtfertigenden Krieg, „der Menschen und dem souveränen Staat der Ukraine aufgebürdet wird, und beklagt, dass sehr viele Menschen durch Tod, Zerstörung und Vertreibung, durch zerstörte Beziehungen und die tief verwurzelte Feindschaft zwischen den Menschen in der Region, durch das gestiegene Risiko globaler Konfrontationen und einer Hungersnot in diversen Weltregionen, die schon jetzt von Ernährungsunsicherheit betroffen sind, und durch wirtschaftliche Not und gestiegene gesellschaftliche und politische Instabilität weltweit immer noch einen furchtbaren Preis zahlen.“
