A briefing on 25 May at 12.00-13.30 CET will feature experts who will offer crucial updates on the global food crisis as well as a summary of urgent response from faith-based group, civil society, and governments.

Organised by the Council for World Mission (CWM), Lutheran World Federation (LWF), World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC), World Council of Churches (WCC) and World Methodist Council (WMC) under the New International Financial and Economic Architecture (NIFEA) initiative, the NIFEA E-conference on “Degrowth - Living Sufficiently and Sustainably” will be a space to discuss and unpack various visions of “de-growth” or “post-growth” with a view to addressing the urgent eco-crisis and pandemic of inequality besetting the planet today.

As part of the New International Financial and Economic Architecture (NIFEA) initiative, the World Council of Churches together with the World Communion of Reformed Churches, Lutheran World Federation, World Methodist Council and Council for World Mission will be hosting a webinar highlighting the voices of Indigenous Peoples and their understandings of the Economy of Life.  

The webinar will be an opportunity to explore how taxation, reparations and debt cancellation could contribute to shaping an Economy of Life in the current landscape marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, widening socio-economic inequalities and a burgeoning climate emergency. The event will offer faith-rooted and gender-just perspectives as well as share concrete proposals as part of the ecumenical #ZacTax and Jubilee campaigns.

How we manage land and water; what we eat, what we drink; where we source our food from – all have a profound influence on the environment, society, and our health. This reality challenges us to live responsibly on this wonderful creation we know as planet Earth.

The side-event will be an opportunity to explore how taxation and reparations can contribute to “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality,” the theme of the 2019 High-Level Political Forum on the SDGs (08-17 July 2019, New York). Rising inequality – often rooted in historical injustices – and runaway climate change are fuelling poverty, social disintegration and conflicts around the world.

On Tuesday, 29 January 29 2019, the Fifth Annual Symposium on the Role of Religion and Faith-based Organizations in International Affairs will focus on financing for sustainable development and build on this vision of an economy of life as the flourishing of all life. Panel discussions will consider the broad issues of economic justice as addressed in the course of human rights-based development, governance and accountability in the global financial architecture, the implications for environmental sustainability, gender justice and financing social protection.

Jointly organized by the World Council of Churches, World Communion of Reformed Churches, Council for World Mission and Lutheran World Federation, the 3rd meeting of the Ecumenical Panel on a NIFEA will take place in New York from 21-22 April 2018.
