A church that cares for its youth in the midst of HIV and AIDS

The old chapel of the United Evangelical Church "Anglican Community in Angola" in the neighborhood of Golf 1 in Luanda turned out to be quite small for the large number of students from the church's district school. 200 of them had come to attend a workshop on "HIV and AIDS amongst Adolescents and Youth: The Church´s Responsibility" on 2 August, organized by the World Council of Churches' Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiatives and Advocacy (WCC-EHAIA) team.

In his report to the Executive Committee, WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit noted that we are living in a time when the purpose and the objectives of the WCC are highly relevant.

Based on these realities, there is a need for a new search for unity, he said. “Through the many dimensions of its work, the WCC contributes to the unity of the church, and the unity that the WCC is able to express, in turn, contributes to the unity of humankind.”

Youth engagement fundamental to HIV response

In the West African countries of Togo and Benin, adolescents and young people are confronted by various obstacles in accessing sexual and reproductive health services. Organized by the World Council of Churches Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiatives and Advocacy West Africa regional office in Lomé, Togo, a workshop for 25 adolescents and young people from Benin and Togo helped participants make safe, responsible choices that prevent HIV infection.

UN discussion focuses on women, HIV and property rights

These man’s thoughts during his brother’s funeral were used by Jane Ng’ang’a, national coordinator, International Network of Religious Leaders Living with or Personally Affected by HIV (INERELA+) Kenya Chapter, to push the debate on property and inheritance rights linked to HIV. The discussion was held during the 61st Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), on 16 March, at the headquarters of UNAIDS, in New York.

Hope and history on the agenda as WCC leadership convenes

The leadership of the WCC Central Committee met in Geneva on 14-15 March to prepare for the Executive Committee meeting in June in Geneva. The WCC continues to focus on its pilgrimage of justice and peace, preparations for the 11th Assembly in 2021 as well as its upcoming 70th anniversary. The WCC was formed in October 1948 in Amsterdam. During 2018, the WCC fellowship will not only celebrate significant milestones in the history of the WCC but also continue to address modern injustices and the ongoing struggle for a just peace.

Los dirigentes del Comité Central del CMI se reunieron en Ginebra el 14 y 15 de marzo para preparar la reunión del Comité Ejecutivo que tendrá lugar en junio también en Ginebra. El CMI sigue centrándose en su peregrinación de justicia y paz, los preparativos de la XI Asamblea, que se celebrará en 2021, y su próximo 70º aniversario. El CMI fue creado en octubre de 1948 en Ámsterdam. Durante 2018, la comunidad del CMI no solo celebrará hitos significativos de la historia del CMI, sino que seguirá abordando las injusticias modernas y la lucha continua por la paz justa.

La direction du Comité central du COE s’est réunie à Genève les 14 et 15 mars afin de préparer la réunion du Comité exécutif qui se déroulera en juin à Genève. Le COE continue à mettre l’accent sur les préparations de son Pèlerinage de justice et paix pour la Onzième Assemblée de 2021, et pour son 70e anniversaire qui approche. Le COE a été créé en 1948 à Amsterdam. L’année 2018 marquera un moment important de l’histoire de la communauté fraternelle du COE, mais c’est également une année pendant laquelle le Conseil œcuménique des Églises poursuivra la lutte contre les injustices modernes et pour une paix juste.

Das Führungsteam des Zentralausschusses des ÖRK hat sich am 14. und 15. März in Genf getroffen, um die Tagung des Exekutivausschusses im Juni in Genf vorzubereiten. Friedens, die Vorbereitungen auf die 11. Vollversammlung 2021 sowie das anstehende 70. Gründungsjubiläum. Der ÖRK wurde im Oktober 1948 in Amsterdam gegründet. Im Jahre 2018 wird die ÖRK-Gemeinschaft nicht nur wichtige Meilensteine in der Geschichte des ÖRK feiern, sondern weiterhin Ungerechtigkeiten unserer heutigen Zeit und den anhaltenden Kampf für einen gerechten Frieden thematisieren.
