Celebrating the life of an ecumenical champion for economic justice: Rev. Malcolm Damon

Rev. Malcolm Damon, ecumenical champion of justice for the economy and the Earth, and a son of South Africa, passed away on 8 September.

Damon was a founding member of the Economic Justice Network formed in 1997 to serve the Fellowship of Christian Councils in Southern Africa, consisting of 12 national Christian councils in southern African nations. In 2001, he joined Economic Justice Network as its executive director. Under his leadership, the network became a leading advocate in the southern African region for a fairer global trading system, tax reform and climate justice.

“Good healthcare a right, not a privilege,” says WCC-EAA

The World Council of Churches - Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance endorses a newly expanded collaboration on HIV between the Medicine Patent Pool and Gilead. On 4 October, the MPP announced a licence with Gilead Sciences for bictegravir, a new integrase inhibitor part of a once-daily, single-tablet HIV regimen currently filed for regulatory approval at the United States Food and Drug Administration and the European Union.

Appell an G20: Im Kampf gegen den Hunger müssen die mächtigen Industrienationen Führung übernehmen

In einem an die wichtigsten Volkswirtschaften der Welt gerichteten Appell, der im Vorfeld ihres alljährlichen Gipfeltreffens veröffentlicht wurde, haben der Ökumenische Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK), das ACT-Bündnis und die Gesamtafrikanische Kirchenkonferenz die Führungsverantwortlichen der G20-Staaten dringend aufgefordert, Maßnahmen zur Überwindung des Hungers und zur Stärkung von Gerechtigkeit und Frieden am Horn von Afrika zu ergreifen.

„Jetzt muss was passieren“ – „Lasst uns dieses Virus besiegen“

Am Tag des afrikanischen Kindes 2017 beteiligten sich religiöse Verantwortungsträger/innen aus verschiedensten in Kenia vertretenen Glaubenstraditionen an einer Demonstration in Nairobi und sprachen sich öffentlich für die Rechte von HIV-positiven Kindern und Jugendlichen aus. Hunderte Menschen begleiteten sie, darunter auch Schulkinder aus sechs Schulen in Nairobi und Dutzende jugendliche Freiwillige.

Marching through the streets of Nairobi on the Day of the African Child 2017, religious leaders from a range of faith communities in Kenya spoke up publicly for the rights of children and adolescents living with HIV, accompanied by hundreds of people, among them school children from six Nairobi-based schools, as well as dozens of youth volunteers.
