Humanitarian zones resist violence in Colombia

They are called Pueblo Nuevo (new town), Bella Flor (beautiful flower), Nueva Esperanza (new hope), El Tesoro (the treasure). Names that clearly show what "humanitarian zones" mean to the people who live there. Hundreds of families displaced by violence in Colombia's rural areas are trying to rebuild their lives in these zones while at the same time demanding the return of their land.

El secretario general del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) pastor Dr. Samuel Kobia expresó "alegría" a causa de la liberación de Ingrid Betancourt y otros rehenes en Colombia hoy. Manifestando beneplácito por una liberación que es "un paso importante en un proceso aún incompleto", Kobia pidió a las FARC que "dejen en libertad a los rehenes por razones humanitarias".

WCC director applauds liberation of Colombian hostages

The liberation of Clara Rojas and Consuelo González "is a sign of hope that shows that a negotiated solution to the situation in Colombia is possible", stated today Rev. Elenora Giddings Ivory, director of the World Council of Churches (WCC) programme on Public witness: addressing power and affirming peace . Expressing joy at the liberation of the two women held hostage by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) for about six years, Giddings Ivory congratulated the mediators and called on the Colombian government and the FARC "to look for peaceful ways of ending the long lasting violent conflict", in which "civil society has suffered the most", with hundred of civilians "victimized by the ongoing military operations". Giddings Ivory also affirmed that a "humanitarian agreement is still possible and urgent to put an end to the hostage situation". Several hundreds of people are believed to be held hostages by the FARC.

La liberación de Clara Rojas y Consuelo González "es un signo de esperanza que muestra que es posible una solución negociada a la situación de Colombia", afirmó hoy la Rev. Eleonora Giddings Ivory, directora del programa del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) sobre Testimonio público: confrontar el poder, afirmar la paz . Tras expresar su alegría por la liberación de las dos mujeres retenidas como rehenes por las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) durante unos seis años, Giddings Ivory felicitó a los mediadores y pidió al Gobierno Colombiano y a las FARC que "busquen medios pacíficos para poner fin al prolongado conflicto" en el que "quien más sufre es la sociedad civil", ya que centenares de personas civiles "son víctimas de las continuas operaciones militares".  Giddings Ivory afirmó también que "todavía es posible un acuerdo humanitario y que es urgentemente necesario poner fin a la situación de los rehenes". Se cree que varios centenares de personas están retenidas como rehenes por las FARC.
