The World Council of Churches (WCC) is beginning a project with local partners in four countries—India, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, and Jamaica—to bring back HIV and AIDS response to the national agendas, this time with a focus on sustainability.

The Council of Baptist Churches in North East India (CBCNEI) is one of the largest Baptist groups in India, including 1.2 million members in 7,263 congregations. Dr A. George Ninan, an ecumenical leader of international standing and a long-time pastor and diocesan bishop in the Church of North India, passed away in New York City on 21 June at the age of 80. Called by some “the radical voice of the voiceless”, throughout his ministry he organized for the poor, oppressed and outcast in India and, in retirement, continued as a church and community volunteer in the USA.

After a concerted examination of the evidence presented at the Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons and two earlier conferences, 44 of the states present called for a ban on nuclear weapons. The host government Austria added momentum with a specific, cooperative pledge to “fill the legal gap for the prohibition of nuclear weapons” and eliminate them.
