A memorable Central Committee meeting saw the election of the World Council of Churches' (WCC) first African general secretary, a commitment to explore new ways of configuring the whole ecumenical movement, and an in-depth examination of the place of disabled people in the life of the churches.

Following a closed session in which two candidates for the position of WCC general secretary were presented to the Central Committee, the body's moderator, His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of Cilicia, released the names of the candidates.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) will be hosting an international consultation on "Christians and Muslims in dialogue and beyond". The three-day consultation will take place from 16-18 October 2002 at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva, Switzerland.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) was deeply grieved to learn of the sudden death of a former member of staff, Father Ion Bria, on 2 July 2002, in Geneva. In 1973, Bria took up the post of executive secretary for mission and relations with Orthodox churches within the WCC, and in 1987 became the director of the WCC Sub-unit for Renewal and Congregational Life. Shortly before his retirement in 1994, Father Ion took up the post of director of the Faith and Witness Unit.

The forthcoming meeting of the executive committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) will be held in Nyborg, Denmark, 19-22 February at the invitation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark and of the Church of Denmark's Council on International Relations. It is the first time since the WCC's eighth assembly, in Harare, Zimbabwe, 1998, that the WCC executive committee is meeting outside Geneva.
