An “Out of the Shadows ” toolkit—a collection of resources to help churches protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation—is now available in French and Spanish in addition to English.

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, one of the people who followed in the footsteps of Desmond Tutu as archbishop of Cape Town and Metropolitan of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa announced the death of “the Arch” as he was affectionately known on 26 December, fittingly celebrated in South Africa as the “Day of Goodwill.”

Today the world joins in mourning the passing of a towering figure in the struggle for freedom and for human dignity and rights.

Desmond Mpilo Tutu was a unique character. His contagious sense of humour and laughter has helped to resolve many critical situations in South Africa’s political and church life. An online conference, “The Future of Interfaith Dialogue,” held  7-8 December, discussed principles for common formation as a vital element for the future of interfaith dialogue. Via panel discussion, participants discussed how the future of interfaith dialogue is best accomplished by encouraging common formation in which people, especially young people, of different faiths learn together with a common goal, and in the course of the learning discover more about each other.

A special COP26 service involving Christian churches and organisations from around the world will be held at Glasgow Cathedral on Sunday afternoon. (7 November). The event, which has been organised by Glasgow Churches Together, will be attended by guests from countries including Australia, Fiji, and Zimbabwe, as a show of solidarity for global climate justice.

At a side event during COP26, indigenous voices rang on the theme “Making Peace with Nature: Heeding the Call of Indigenous Peoples.” Held on 3 November, the virtual event drew enthusiastic supporters who waited outside the door of the meeting room in a show of solidarity.

With the welcoming sound of South African drums, the 58th meeting of the World Council of Churches Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA) began this week in Johannesburg, reviewing the work of the commission between two WCC assemblies and discussing the churches’ engagement in critical issues of the world today.
