WCC Eco-School begins in Crete

Fifteen young people from 10 countries across Europe and North America are taking part of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Eco-School at the Orthodox Academy of Crete, Greece, 11-18 November, exploring water, food, and climate justice.

WCC invites all to World AIDS Day prayer service

On 1 December, World AIDS Day will mark more than 40 years since the first outbreak of the epidemic; however, in 2021, every two minutes, an adolescent girl or young woman (15-24 years old) acquired HIV.

Persönliche Ansprechpartner: ÖRK-Team begleitet die Menschen durch die COVID-19-Pandemie

Der ÖRK gibt seinen Mitgliedskirchen die Möglichkeit, inmitten der COVID-19-Pandemie Unterstützung von persönlichen Ansprechpartnern zu erhalten. Der ÖRK hat ein aus acht erfahrenen Personen bestehendes Team zusammengestellt, das Kirchen beratend zur Seite steht und sie dabei unterstützt, ihre Rolle während der Coronavirus-Pandemie zu finden, sich als Glaubensgemeinschaften auf die Situation einzustellen zu können und sich untereinander am besten zu unterstützen und zu kommunizieren.

Faces of help: WCC offers resource people to accompany during COVID-19 pandemic

The WCC is offering member churches some resources with a human face during the COVID-19 pandemic. A team of eight resource people has been made available to consult on how churches can discern their roles during the coronavirus pandemic, how they can adapt as faith communities, and how they can connect and share with each other.

Le COE met à la disposition de ses Églises membres des ressources et des visages humains pendant la pandémie de COVID-19. Une équipe de huit personnes-ressources a été créée pour répondre aux questions relatives au discernement des Églises sur leur rôle pendant la pandémie de coronavirus, à la manière de s’adapter en tant que communautés d’inspiration religieuse, mais aussi d’interagir et de partager les unes avec les autres.

Dr Cecile De Sweemer, the doer of God

Dr Cecile De Sweemer, who served as staff of the Christian Medical Commission of the World Council of Churches (WCC) from 1982 to 1986, died on the 27 November in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). De Sweemer, a Belgian medical doctor with a doctorate in International Health from Johns Hopkins University, with extensive experience in Asia and Africa, was a dedicated and compassionate physician.

On 26 July at the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam, there was a marked change in colour at the Interfaith Networking Zone. It was Thursday, and from morning prayers to the evening informal networking, the theme was “black”.

As gaps in infection and treatment between adults and children have become more apparent, there are now more concerted efforts to “super fast-track” services for children. But will they be enough?

WCC mourns passing of Calle Almedal

The WCC is mourning the death of Calle Almedal, a great friend of WCC and of all faith communities, as well as a pioneer in the field of HIV. Almedal passed away on 7 June.

This week world leaders are gathered in Davos under the very theme of “Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World”. They do so at a time when we see poverty amongst plenty; hunger and thirst in the midst of abundance; shocking disparities in the quality of life between neighboring communities: real problems that the world has the potential and the possibilities to resolve.
